Job Title: Converting OperatorJob Description

The Converting Operator operates production machinery for flexible packaging, including labels and printed boxes, while ensuring consistent quality, safe operation, and clean, well-maintained equipment throughout each shift.

Responsibilities

• Operate converting machinery used for flexible packaging, including labels and printed boxes, in a safe and efficient manner.
• Set up, run, and monitor production lines to ensure products meet quality and specification requirements.
• Utilize and maintain mounting equipment, ensuring it remains clean, organized, and in proper working condition throughout the shift.
• Handle and manage printing plates used as molds, including cleaning them before storage and preparing them for upcoming print runs.
• Inspect each plate before use to confirm it is clean, undamaged, and suitable for the required print run.
• Read and interpret tape measurements accurately to support machine setup, alignment, and quality checks.
• Troubleshoot machinery and production line issues as they arise to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
• Perform basic mechanical adjustments and minor repairs as needed, demonstrating strong mechanical aptitude.
• Assist with assembly tasks related to the production process as required.
• Follow all safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Collaborate with team members and communicate any equipment, quality, or safety concerns to appropriate personnel.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 6 months of machine operation experience, preferably in a production or industrial environment.
• At least 1 year of experience working in a manufacturing setting.
• Ability to read and accurately use a tape measure.
• Ability to troubleshoot machinery and production line issues when needed.
• Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with mechanical equipment.
• Experience working on a production line.
• Ability to perform basic assembly tasks.
• Strong attention to detail, particularly when inspecting plates and monitoring print quality.
• Commitment to following safety procedures and using required personal protective equipment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Press operator experience is a plus.
• Experience working in a smaller manufacturing environment is beneficial.
• Ability to learn new equipment and processes during cross-training.
• Strong work ethic and reliability, with a willingness to work hard during scheduled shifts.

Work Environment

This role is based in a smaller, family-owned and operated manufacturing facility with a close-knit, family-oriented culture and very low turnover. Team members are expected to work hard while on shift, and leadership remains accommodating to personal and family needs. The position is on 2nd shift, typically from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with training conducted on 1st shift from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for approximately two weeks. The environment involves operating production machinery and working on a manufacturing floor where personal protective equipment is provided, including safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection. The dress code requires steel toe boots, jeans or work pants without holes, and a t-shirt, suitable for a hands-on, industrial setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Ames, IA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
