Machine Engraver information

What are machine engravers?

Machine engravers are skilled workers who operate specialized machinery to inscribe designs, text, or patterns onto various materials such as metal, glass, wood, or plastic. They use engraving machines that may be manually controlled or computer-operated (CNC), ensuring precision and consistency in the final product. Machine engravers are employed in industries ranging from jewelry and awards to manufacturing and industrial marking. Their work is essential for creating detailed, permanent markings for identification, decoration, or branding.

What are some typical challenges a Machine Engraver faces on the job?

Machine Engravers often encounter challenges such as working with a variety of materials—each requiring different machine settings and engraving techniques. Precision and attention to detail are crucial, as even minor mistakes can lead to material waste or rework. Additionally, adapting to new engraving technologies and maintaining equipment can be demanding. Team collaboration is important, especially when coordinating with designers or quality control to ensure final products meet specifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Engraver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Engraver, you need strong attention to detail, precision, manual dexterity, and typically a high school diploma or vocational training in machining or engraving. Familiarity with engraving machines, CNC systems, and design software such as CAD is often required. Patience, problem-solving, and effective communication set outstanding engravers apart. These skills ensure high-quality, accurate engravings and efficient workflow in custom manufacturing environments.

Job description

Company Overview

For more than 25 years, In The Light Urns has created personalized memorial products that help families honor loved ones through custom craftsmanship and meaningful design.

Job Summary

We are seeking a Laser Engraver and Digital Specialist to join our team. This role involves operating laser engraving equipment to produce detailed designs on various materials, as well as utilizing digital skills related to creating memorial products. The ideal candidate will have a desire to utilize training videos, equipment manuals, and software tutorials to fully understand the laser's capabilities, maximize machine features, and troubleshoot production challenges.

Every project is unique. One day, you may be preparing artwork for a crystal memorial; the next, creating a personalized wood urn or engraving fine jewelry. Your work directly helps families memorialize the people they love. This paid position offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to a leading company dedicated to quality craftsmanship and innovative memorial products.

Responsibilities

  • Operate laser engraving machinery with precision, ensuring accurate engraving of designs and text on different substrates, including wood, glass, plastic, metal, and fine jewelry.
  • Maintain and calibrate equipment regularly to ensure safety, quality, and optimal performance.
  • Prepare and lay out graphic files using CorelDRAW, Adobe Photoshop, or equivalent software to precisely position, scale, and manipulate digital artwork for engraving memorial products.
  • Assist in troubleshooting technical issues related to the machinery available to this operator, demonstrating dedication and urgency in completing each job, regardless of size or complexity.

Qualifications

  • Experience with Laser Control Software: Familiarity with translating graphics into laser commands by assigning speed, power, and frequency parameters based on the material being engraved.
  • Material Awareness: A foundational understanding of how lasers interact with different substrates (e.g., recognizing that glass or crystal requires different power and speed settings than metal or wood to avoid fracturing or producing weak marks).
  • Technical Resourcefulness: The ability and willingness to actively use digital resources—such as manufacturer tutorials, training videos, and equipment documentation—to learn the machine's advanced capabilities and independently troubleshoot settings. The successful candidate will strive to develop a strong familiarity with laser engraving machinery and digital media production tools.
  • Proficiency in CorelDRAW: Essential for managing vector artwork, scaling layouts to exact physical dimensions, and creating multi-item templates.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop: Necessary for preparing photographs and complex artwork, including contrast adjustments, grayscale conversions, and dithering to ensure images engrave clearly on materials such as crystal and glass.
  • Understanding of Vector vs. Raster Graphics: Must understand the difference between artwork that should be vector scored or cut and artwork that should be raster engraved.
  • Effective Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and work collaboratively within a team environment.

Opportunity

This position provides an engaging opportunity for candidates who are passionate about combining technical skills with creative design in a supportive environment dedicated to quality craftsmanship. The products we create become lasting memorials for families, making attention to detail, compassion, and quality far more important than production speed alone.
