What is machine design?

Machine design is the process of creating new machines or improving existing ones to meet specific needs or solve particular problems. It involves applying engineering principles to select materials, determine dimensions, and specify manufacturing methods for machine components. The process includes conceptualization, detailed design, analysis, testing, and documentation. Machine designers often use CAD software and simulation tools to visualize and test their designs before production. Their work is critical in industries ranging from automotive to manufacturing and robotics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Designer, you need strong skills in mechanical engineering, 3D modeling, and design principles, generally supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD) and familiarity with manufacturing processes and material selection is essential. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and translating concepts into practical solutions. These skills ensure that machine designs are efficient, manufacturable, and meet both technical specifications and client needs.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in machine design roles, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in machine design often encounter challenges such as balancing cost constraints with performance requirements, meeting tight project deadlines, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. Effective collaboration with interdisciplinary teams, such as manufacturing, electrical, and quality assurance, is crucial to address these challenges. Staying updated with the latest CAD software, simulation tools, and engineering best practices can also help streamline the design process and improve outcomes.

What is the difference between Machine Design vs Mechanical Engineering?

AspectMachine DesignMechanical Engineering
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field; certifications like Certified Professional Engineer (PE) beneficialBachelor's or higher in Mechanical Engineering; PE licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, manufacturing facilities, office settingsDesign, testing labs, manufacturing plants, research facilities
Industry UsageFocuses on creating and improving specific machine components and systemsBroader scope including thermodynamics, materials, and system integration

Machine Design specializes in developing specific machine components and systems, often requiring detailed design skills. Mechanical Engineering covers a wider range of engineering principles, including thermodynamics, materials, and system analysis. While both roles share similar credentials and work environments, Machine Design is more focused on the detailed creation of machines, whereas Mechanical Engineering encompasses a broader engineering scope.

How do you become a machine design engineer?

To become a machine design engineer, typically a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field is required. Gaining experience through internships, developing skills in CAD software, and obtaining professional engineering licensure can enhance career prospects.

Job Description

Position Summary:

As Global Product Manager for assigned Independent Cart Technology (ICT) products, you will manage products throughout their lifecycle. From vision and execution to roadmap definition, feature prioritization, and external communication, you will shape the future of these solutions and help grow a loyal internal and external customer base. You will lead product strategy and execution from concept through delivery, working with teams across sales, marketing, finance, legal, support, product development, engineering, and partner companies. This individual contributor role includes indirect leadership of a broader team and functionally reports to the Independent Cart Technology (ICT) Global Business Manager.

We are looking for a product manager passionate about growing the Independent Cart Technology (ICT) business in a maturing market and supporting its transformation. You have a strong understanding of industrial automation machine design, Independent Cart Technology (ICT), Motion Control, emerging technologies, and market trends.

What Motion Control Does:

To stay ahead in today's business environment, companies need faster ways to design, develop, and deliver advanced machines that meet customer goals. Our Motion Control software simplifies machine design, integration, and system debugging while accelerating time to market.

We offer servo drives, servo motors, and actuators that simplify machine design, increase system flexibility, and improve performance. We also provide a new linear motor approach that uses magnets instead of gears, chains, and belts to deliver precise motion control with frictionless propulsion. This reduces downtime and maintenance, lowers energy consumption, and improves the ability to change machine profiles.

Your Responsibilities:

Functional

  • Manage the full product lifecycle, from strategic planning and new product development through launch, support, discontinuation, and migration planning.
  • Drive Independent Cart Technology (ICT) adoption and channel strategy to grow the customer base for assigned products.
  • Prioritize the product backlog in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Analyze market trends, customer requirements, and competitive strategies to identify opportunities that increase customer and business value.
  • Develop business cases and detailed product requirements based on market needs and industry trends.
  • Lead new product development from concept through commercialization, including voice-of-customer research, value proposition definition, customer and product requirements, presentations, and competitive analysis.
  • Work with manufacturing, supply chain, and sourcing to ensure market-relevant lead times.
  • Understand and support engineering-to-order business requirements to meet customer needs.
  • Be a subject matter expert and advocate for the products and features you own.
  • Represent assigned products at internal and external events.
  • Be the primary contact for partner companies to drive greater adoption.
  • Set global competitive pricing aligned with regional channel strategy.
  • Travel globally up to 30% of the time.

  • Model collaborative, accountable behavior for peers and partners.
  • Make informed decisions consistent with company policies and delegation-of-authority requirements.
  • Support customer success stories and commercial marketing collateral.
  • Follow applicable health, safety, quality, environmental, and company requirements.

Interpersonal

  • Communicate product updates and milestones to internal and external partners.
  • Make decisions and lead issues to resolution.
  • Keep management, peers, and team members informed on important activities.
  • Experience managing multiple simultaneous projects, responsibilities and topics.
The Essentials - You Will Have:
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.
