Overview

CTG's long-standing Fortune 500 client of over 15 years has a W2 contract assignment for a Contract Mechanical Engineer II – Controls Experience, with experience supporting manufacturing automation and controls-integrated equipment. This position focuses on designing, improving, and supporting automated production machinery, working closely with controls, electrical, and manufacturing engineering teams to increase equipment reliability, efficiency, and safety.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with experience in machine design, production equipment, automation, and hands-on manufacturing support.

Job Title: Contract Mechanical Engineer II – Controls Experience
Location: Newton, NC
Candidates must be able to commute and work onsite in Newton, NC
Pay Rate: Based on experience
Work Hours: M-F 8am-5pm
Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design mechanical components, tooling, fixtures, and assemblies for automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Support integration of mechanical systems with PLC-controlled automation, servo motors, sensors, pneumatics, actuators, and motion control systems.
  • Create and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and bills of materials.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical equipment issues on the manufacturing floor.
  • Support equipment installation, commissioning, startup, validation, and production ramp-up activities.
  • Perform root cause analysis and implement improvements that reduce downtime and improve equipment performance.
  • Partner with manufacturing, controls, electrical, maintenance, and production teams on automation projects.
  • Ensure designs meet quality, safety, and manufacturing standards.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, reliability, safety, and cost reduction.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of mechanical engineering experience in manufacturing, industrial automation, or machine design.
  • Experience supporting automated manufacturing equipment, assembly systems, conveyors, packaging equipment, or material handling systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLC-integrated mechanical systems, sensors, pneumatics, servo systems, and industrial automation.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, Inventor, or similar.
  • Experience creating detailed mechanical drawings and engineering documentation.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in manufacturing environments.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with robotics, automated assembly, or high-speed manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with Allen-Bradley or Siemens PLC-controlled equipment.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, FMEA, Lean Manufacturing, 5 Why, and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Experience with FAT, SAT, equipment commissioning, and production startup.
  • Exposure to vision systems, robotic cells, or motion control applications.
