Machine Design Engineers focus on creating and improving machinery and industrial equipment, often working in manufacturing environments. Mechanical Design Engineers have a broader scope, designing various mechanical components and products across multiple industries. While both roles require similar qualifications and skills, their primary focus and work settings differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering principles, proficiency in CAD software, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, FEA simulation software, and knowledge of industry standards is essential, and professional certification (such as PE licensure) is often advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies are crucial for designing safe, efficient machines and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to bring innovative mechanical solutions to life.

What does a Machine Design Engineer do?

A Machine Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing mechanical systems or machines to meet specific requirements. They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create blueprints and models, select appropriate materials, and ensure that designs are cost-effective, functional, and safe. Machine Design Engineers often collaborate with other engineers and manufacturing teams to refine designs and oversee the production process. Their work is crucial in industries such as manufacturing, automotive, and robotics.

How does a Machine Design Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during the product development process?

Machine Design Engineers frequently work alongside manufacturing, electrical, and software engineers, as well as project managers, to ensure that designs are practical, manufacturable, and meet performance requirements. They participate in regular design reviews, communicate technical concepts, and incorporate feedback from other departments to improve their designs. Effective collaboration is essential, as it helps identify potential issues early and ensures that the final product aligns with overall project objectives and constraints.

Job description

Senior Automation & Robotics Design Engineer (Custom Machinery / OEM)

Up to $120,000 Base Salary • Greater Milwaukee Area (Brown Deer Vicinity) • 100% Onsite Join a high-growth industrial OEM architecting ground-up, one-of-a-kind automated systems for a global client base Take a lead seat on an elite innovation team, directing high-speed robotic work cell builds from a blank sheet of paper

  • EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) OR 5+ years of direct, custom industrial machine design-build experience is a strict requirement
  • TECHNICAL FOCUS 3+ years of dedicated success specifically in custom automated equipment engineering (Not consumer products, electronics, or scanning devices)
  • SOFTWARE PLATFORM Direct, current proficiency in SolidWorks for complex machinery layout (Firm is actively transitioning to a 100% SolidWorks environment)
  • COMPENSATION Up to $120,000 Base Salary (Depending on technical depth) + Comprehensive Premium Benefits Package
  • WORK TYPE Full-Time, Permanent, W-2 (100% Onsite role with zero remote/WFH capability)
  • LOCATION Brown Deer, WI area (Must reside within a 45-minute drive of the facility; No relocation assistance available)

If you are an inventive engineer who thrives on the challenge of true "blank page" design and wants to escape the monotony of standard product modifications, this position offers the ultimate professional playground. Our client is a highly agile, employee-oriented automation company transitioning into a high-growth original equipment manufacturer (OEM). As one of just five lead engineers on this elite team, your design footprints will be embedded into complex, multi-million dollar automated systems shipped directly to global manufacturing giants across the United States and Europe.

This role offers a refreshing, close-knit collaborative environment completely free of multi-layered corporate red tape. Because their state-of-the-art engineering suite sits directly alongside a modern production floor, you will experience the distinct professional satisfaction of watching your custom, high-speed robotic creations physically fabricated, wired, and debugged right in front of you. With expanding market demand and a clear trajectory for technical leadership, this position offers high visibility and an exceptional runway for career advancement.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Leading the mechanical design integrity, engineering approach, and financial profitability for highly complex, custom machine design-build projects
  • Partnering directly with Project Managers during initial concept reviews to translate unique customer machine specifications into innovative, high-margin, and cost-effective automation solutions
  • Structuring and breaking down complex mechanical design initiatives into manageable milestones, supervising the workflows of both in-house detailers and external engineering houses
  • Applying sound fluid power design practices, specifying advanced hydraulic and pneumatic components tailored to the precise structural needs of each unique build
  • Conducting early-stage risk assessments to proactively identify and engineer out potential safety hazards, mechanical pinch points, or component accessibility roadblocks
  • Managing high-level technical communications with global corporate clients to ensure target machine cycle times meet rigorous international standards
  • Facilitating real-time corrective actions and maintaining strict engineering release schedules to keep active projects completely on budget and on time
What We Are Looking For
  • Custom Design Pedigree: A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience designing specialized industrial equipment, with a comprehensive grasp of machine tool dynamics, advanced material science, and mechanical power transmission concepts
  • Advanced Manufacturing Literacy: Direct exposure to industrial welding processes (GMAW, GTAW, Laser) and high-speed multi-axis automated assembly procedures
  • Project Leadership: A proven ability to successfully manage strict project timelines, coordinate design budgets, and direct a small, dedicated team of designers or technical detailers
  • Professional Reliability: A rock-solid, dependable work history that demonstrates career longevity and multi-year tenures with previous employers
