Job description

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will execute industrial equipment design activities to deliver engineering projects that meet required quality, schedule, and budget. You will design mechanical equipment and related process systems (piping, structural, combustion, hydraulic, pneumatic), working closely with cross-functional engineering teams, project managers, vendors, and occasionally customers. You will contribute through the full project lifecycle, from concept and sizing through final documentation and site support.
Key Responsibilities
  • Review contract documentation, technical specifications, and project drawings to ensure compliance with scope and requirements.
  • Select and size equipment and components considering application, duty cycle, safety/regulatory rules, environment, and total installed cost.
  • Perform and maintain engineering calculations for mechanical components, system sizing, and performance verification.
  • Design mechanical equipment, assemblies, and structural/mechanical integrations.
  • Design project-related process systems in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and Tenova procedures.
  • Provide loading data and calculations for foundation outlines and loading diagrams.
  • Prepare technical specifications for mechanical, piping, and process system components.
  • Issue component/system requisitions and support procurement with technical evaluations.
  • Review vendor submittals and drawings for compliance with specifications and project needs.
  • Guide development/release of mechanical, structural, foundation, piping, and process drawings.
  • Support Project Managers and other disciplines with technical input across execution.
  • Prepare operating instructions and technical documentation for mechanical and process equipment.
  • Participate in site installation, commissioning, and acceptance activities when required.
  • Ensure design work follows ISO standards and internal quality procedures.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • 1-3 years of engineering/design experience in heavy industrial equipment, process plants, or similar environments.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic system design.
  • Solid understanding of mechanical design fundamentals (machine elements, structures, piping).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, P&IDs, and technical specs.
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and practical, safety-minded design approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver on given deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
  • Strong communication (written and verbal) skills with internal teams, vendors, and customers.

Preferred Skills
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Inventor (or equivalent 2D/3D CAD tools).
  • Exposure to FEA/CFD or engineering simulation techniques.
  • FE Exam passed or progress toward professional licensure.
  • Experience with refractory systems/materials or high-temperature industrial environments.
  • Prior field/commissioning or site-engineering experience.

Job Type: Full-time, in-office (hybrid flexibility may be available depending on project needs).
Schedule: Monday - Friday, standard business hours.
Travel: Up to 40% domestic/international travel for site surveys, vendor inspections, commissioning, and project support.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based with prolonged computer use.
  • Site work may include walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladders, and working near heavy industrial equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally and 20 lbs frequently (with or without reasonable accommodation).
