Hire Type: Direct Hire
Pay Range: ~$70,000–$80,000 base salary (target mid-point ~$75,000)

Sterling Engineering is partnering with a leading manufacturer in thermoformed and thermo-packaging solutions, to support the growth of their design engineering team. This Design Engineer role is based at the Madison, WI location and supports product and concept development with a strong focus on tooling and machine design. This position offers hands-on engineering exposure, collaboration across manufacturing and tooling teams, and long-term career growth within a stable, innovative organization.
Responsibilities
  • Support product and concept design initiatives for thermoformed and thermo-packaging products
  • Design and develop tooling, fixtures, and machine components to support manufacturing processes
  • Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and drawings using SolidWorks
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, tooling, and quality teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective
  • Assist with design iterations, engineering changes, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Participate in prototype development, testing, and design validation activities
  • Maintain accurate engineering documentation, BOMs, and revision control
  • Support cross-functional teams with technical problem-solving and design optimization
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 2–5+ years of design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment
  • Thermoforming / thermo-packaging experience
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks (3D modeling and detailed drawings)
  • Experience with tooling and machine design strongly preferred
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacturability principles
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
