Construction Surveyor / GPS Technician (Machine Control & Layout)

Position Summary
Pine Grove LLC (Thomas Construction) is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Construction Surveyor / GPS Technician to support field operations across heavy civil and infrastructure projects in Western and Central Pennsylvania.
This role is responsible for executing construction layout, managing GPS and machine control systems, and developing 3D models and dozer files to support earthwork and grading operations. The ideal candidate brings strong field experience, technical proficiency with Trimble systems, and the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced construction environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform construction layout, topographic surveys, and control surveys using GPS and conventional survey methods
- Execute staking for roadway, bridge, utility, and site development projects
- Develop and maintain 3D machine control models and dozer files using AutoCAD and Carlson software
- Set up, calibrate, and troubleshoot GPS and machine control systems on heavy equipment
- Utilize Trimble robotic total stations and GPS systems for field data collection and layout
- Interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents to ensure accurate field execution
- Support DOT (including PENNDOT) projects including bridge work points, beam seat layout, and deck grades
- Perform layout and verification for sanitary sewer, storm sewer, waterline, and pressure pipe installations
- Maintain all survey control points, GPS systems, and related equipment
- Prepare and maintain as-built documentation and site audit records
- Assist with data management, reporting, and development of construction-related spreadsheets and calculations
- Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and field crews to ensure alignment and accuracy in execution
Additional duties may be assigned based on project needs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of construction surveying and layout experience
- Strong experience with GPS systems, machine control, and field layout operations
- Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Carlson software for model and file creation
- Experience with Trimble robotic total stations and GPS equipment
- Strong understanding of heavy civil construction, including roadway and bridge projects
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and contract documents
- Strong problem-solving skills, particularly in troubleshooting GPS and machine control systems
- High level of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in the field
- Valid drivers license and clean driving record
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting PENNDOT or other DOT projects
- Experience building and managing 3D dozer files and earthwork models
- Post-secondary education in Surveying, Engineering Technology, or related field
- Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) certification (or on track to obtain)
Work Environment
This role operates primarily on active construction sites and requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions. Employees may be exposed to heavy equipment, moving machinery, and typical construction site conditions.
Physical Demands
- Standing, walking, bending, and climbing on uneven terrain
- Lifting and carrying equipment up to 50 pounds
- Extended time spent in field environments
Schedule
- Monday through Friday
- Typical 10-hour shifts, with overtime based on project needs
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly Rate: $38.00 $45.00 per hour (based on experience)
