What are M1s?

M1s typically refer to first-year medical students in the United States. The 'M' stands for medical student, and the number indicates their year in medical school. M1s spend most of their time in the classroom learning foundational medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. This year is crucial for building the knowledge base needed for clinical rotations in later years. M1s may also begin limited clinical experiences and participate in labs or small group discussions.

What are some common challenges faced by M1 (first-level engineering manager) in balancing technical and managerial responsibilities?

As an M1, one of the biggest challenges is striking the right balance between hands-on technical work and new managerial duties such as team development, performance evaluations, and project oversight. M1s often find themselves transitioning from being individual contributors to supporting and enabling their team's success, which can require shifting priorities and learning new skills in leadership, communication, and delegation. Staying technically current while focusing on people management can be demanding, but successful M1s regularly schedule time for both, rely on mentorship, and proactively seek feedback from their teams and peers.
