Position Function:
Conduct research in area of specialty. Publish scholarly articles, monographs, and books in area of specialty. Participate in professional meetings by giving papers, presiding at sessions, and serving as discussant. Promote the development of the archaeological profession locally and nationally by reviewing books and articles for professional journals, serving on professional society committees and boards, and serving as consultant for local and national groups and agencies as the need or occasion arises. Teach undergraduate survey courses. Teach site survey (site discovery, delineation, evaluation) field school for undergraduates and graduate students with leveling needs. Teach excavation field school as necessary. Teach advanced undergraduate students in upper-level topical or area courses. Teach graduate courses in area of specialty, including seminars, special topics, and directed readings. Serve on graduate committees for M.A. students. Direct graduate M.A. theses. Serve on departmental, college, and university committees. For tenure-track but non-tenured persons, expectations in this category are limited. Seek external funding via grants or contracts.

Department Profile:
AMEC (http://amec.msstate.edu/ ) is a dynamic, young, growing department, which offers an anthropology major, Middle Eastern studies minor, and a growing applied anthropology MA program. The MA program has three tracks: archaeology, bioarchaeology, and cultural anthropology. AMEC is in the College of Arts & Sciences, which includes 14 academic departments and eleven programs. The department is housed in the Cobb Institute of Archaeology (http://www.cobb.msstate.edu/), an endowed institute with office and lab space, a research library, a museum, and a curation facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities are two courses one semester and three courses one semester. Offerings include undergraduate service courses and upper-division topical or area courses, split-level upper division undergraduate and lower-level graduate student courses, and graduate seminars. Development of local or regional research projects into which students can be incorporated. Demonstrated ability to contribute intellectually and practically to the department's growing B.A. program in Anthropology and M.A. program in Applied Anthropology. Develop contacts for graduate internships. Promote health of graduate program via external funding of Research Assistants through grants or contracts.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment. Strong candidates must be able to teach a local archaeological site survey field school, to incorporate graduate students into their research, and to participate concretely in the on-going development of the M.A. program in Applied Anthropology. Rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Evidence of successful teaching and research, demonstrable applied experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic field training that includes site survey, familiarity with grants and contracts, effective classroom teaching.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Ability to teach field courses in strenuous conditions.
