LVNs in these roles provide basic nursing care to veterans in VA hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare settings, working under the supervision of registered nurses or physicians. Their responsibilities include monitoring patient health, administering medications, assisting with daily living activities, and supporting the overall care team. Working as an LVN at the VA offers the opportunity to serve those who have served the country, along with access to federal benefits and opportunities for career advancement.

What skills and qualifications are needed to work as an LVN at the VA?

To thrive as an LVN at the VA, you need a valid LVN license, solid knowledge of nursing fundamentals, and experience in patient care. Familiarity with VA-specific electronic health record systems, such as CPRS, and basic life support (BLS) certification are commonly required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for delivering high-quality care and supporting veterans’ unique needs. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care for veterans in a demanding healthcare environment.

How does an LVN at the VA collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to provide patient care?

As an LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) in a VA (Veterans Affairs) facility, you will work closely with registered nurses, physicians, social workers, and other allied health professionals to deliver comprehensive care to veterans. Collaboration often involves participating in care planning meetings, sharing patient observations, and assisting with the implementation of treatment plans. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as LVNs frequently act as a bridge between patients and the broader healthcare team, ensuring that care is coordinated and tailored to veterans' unique needs.
