What is an LPCC intern?

LPCC Interns are individuals who are in the process of completing the requirements to become Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs), typically after earning a relevant graduate degree in counseling or a related field. They work under the supervision of a licensed counselor while gaining the clinical experience needed for full licensure. Their responsibilities may include providing counseling services, conducting assessments, and developing treatment plans, all under supervision. LPCC Interns are essential for bridging academic learning and professional practice, ensuring they meet state-specific licensing criteria.

What types of supervision and mentorship can an LPCC intern expect during their internship?

As an LPCC Intern, you will typically receive regular clinical supervision from a licensed professional counselor who meets your state's board requirements. Supervision may include one-on-one meetings, group supervision sessions, and opportunities for case consultation. Mentorship is often a key part of the experience, with supervisors providing feedback on counseling techniques, ethical decision-making, and professional development. This supportive structure helps interns build confidence, enhance clinical skills, and prepare for independent licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPCC intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an LPCC Intern, you need foundational knowledge in counseling theories, assessment, and treatment planning, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a relevant graduate program and state intern registration. Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, DSM-5 diagnostic tools, and documentation standards is important. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, active listening, and ethical judgment help interns effectively support clients and collaborate with supervisors. These competencies are crucial for providing quality mental health care, maintaining compliance, and developing as a competent professional.
