Navigating feedback from supervisors and integrating it into practice can also be demanding. What is an LPC or LPC under supervision?

An LPC, or Licensed Professional Counselor, is a mental health professional who has met state requirements for education, experience, and examination to provide counseling services. An LPC Under Supervision is a counselor who has completed their degree but is still working under the supervision of a licensed professional as they gain the required post-graduate experience for full licensure. Both can provide therapy, but the LPC Under Supervision must have their work regularly reviewed by a supervisor. This process ensures quality care and professional development as they work toward independent licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPC or LPC under supervision?

To thrive as an LPC or LPC Under Supervision, you need a master's degree in counseling or a related field, supervised clinical experience, and state licensure or candidacy. Familiarity with diagnostic tools (such as DSM-5), electronic health record (EHR) systems, and evidence-based therapeutic modalities is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, active listening, and ethical judgment are crucial soft skills for building trust and rapport with clients. These competencies are vital to provide effective mental health care, ensure client safety, and uphold professional standards in counseling practice.
