Job Overview

Direct patient care contact in the prehospital setting, Emergency Department, hospital patient care units, and during ambulance transport. Ability to accept patient care directives/orders from hospital physicians, nursing staff, and Lowell General Hospital EMS leadership. Cares for patients and conducts clinically appropriate patient care and ambulance transport in accordance with established hospital policies and Massachusetts Statewide Treatment Protocols. Understands and accepts that all responsibilities are essential to job function.

Hours: 40 hours/week - Days/Evenings/Overnights (Variable)

Rotating Weekend/Holiday shifts required

Location: Lowell General Hospital - 295 Varnum Ave - Lowell, MA

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Completion of accredited Emergency Medical Technical-Basic program.

2. National Registered EMT (NREMT).

3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

4. Massachusetts certified Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.

5. Massachusetts issued driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. BCLS Instructor.

2. Incident Command System (ICS) course 100.

3. Three (3) years of related experience.

Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

1. Responds to a wide range of transport situations. Responds to patient's urgent care needs and interfaces with appropriate clinicians in the patient's home with the goal of avoiding unnecessary hospitalization.

2. Performs detailed assessments, diagnostic tests, administers treatments, and contacts online medical control for patient's care and treatment. Obtains medical history and monitors vital signs during patient contact. Completes clinically accurate patient care documentation.

3. Prepares patients for transport and clinically monitors patient to maintain stability.

4. Administers skilled care to patients being transported between hospitals as directed by hospital policy, statewide treatment protocols and physicians.

5. May participate in creating care plans with patient's physicians, including referrals to other care providers.

6. Complies with all health, safety, and privacy regulations.

7. Routinely accesses and utilizes hospital EMS leadership for any circumstance where advanced direction is needed or may assist with proper execution of job responsibilities

8. Complies with performance improvement clinical benchmarks.

9. May perform home visits (scheduled, unscheduled, urgent), assessments and treatments according to MIH protocols and procedures.

10. Assists in emergency department and other hospital patient care units in a patient technician capacity.

11. Completes patient charts using medical record software (Epic EMR).

12. Demonstrates effective and positive teamwork and initiative during EMS operations, within the department and the EMS community.

13. Works collaboratively and in a professional manner with all physicians, referring providers, allied health and public safety personnel.

14. Participates in the discharge planning process of selected patients on inpatient units and in emergency department.

Physical Requirements:

1. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking, and climbing stairs.

2. Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfer patients and equipment up to 125 pounds.

3. Ability to lift and operate ambulance stretcher during patient transfer.

4. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.

5. Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls.

6. Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases and other transmissible infections.

7. May have contact with hazardous materials.

8. Specific vision abilities apply including close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.

9. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations, including weather conditions.

10. Ability to handle emergency and crisis situations.

11. Subjected to irregular hours.

Skills & Abilities:

1. Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.

2. Ability to work independently and accurately with excellent follow-through.

3. Basic to moderate computer skills including the ability to navigate through hospital-based computer systems.

4. Knowledge of medical terminology.

5. Knowledge of math, ability to make calculations, and analytical skills.

6. Good interpersonal skills.

7. Ability to prioritize work and complete tasks in a timely manner.

8. Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information.

9. Skills and knowledge necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span, with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. This includes: Knowledge of growth and development; Ability to interpret age specific data and response to care; and Provide age specific communication.

10. Ability to navigate driving using available GPS and mapping resources.

11. Communicates with others (including patients) and must effectively be able to exchange information accurately via phone, email, and or in person.

12. Demonstrates competence in use of assigned equipment and has established competence in safe ambulance operations.
