Loss Mitigation Associate information

What is a loss mitigation associate?

Loss Mitigation Associates are professionals who work with borrowers and lenders to prevent loan defaults and minimize financial losses, typically in mortgage or lending environments. They assess delinquent accounts, review borrower hardship situations, and recommend solutions such as loan modifications, repayment plans, or short sales. Their goal is to find mutually beneficial resolutions that help borrowers keep their properties while reducing risk and loss for the lender.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a loss mitigation associate?

To thrive as a Loss Mitigation Associate, you need a solid understanding of mortgage servicing, loan workout options, and financial analysis, often supported by experience in banking or real estate and a relevant associate or bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with loan servicing platforms, document management systems, and regulations like RESPA and FHA guidelines is typically required. Strong negotiation, problem-solving, and communication skills are crucial for working with borrowers and collaborating with internal teams. These competencies help minimize financial losses for lenders while assisting borrowers in retaining their homes or navigating alternatives.

How does a loss mitigation associate typically collaborate with other departments to resolve delinquent accounts?

Loss Mitigation Associates work closely with various departments such as collections, underwriting, and customer service to develop solutions for borrowers facing financial hardship. They often coordinate with loan officers to gather documentation, communicate with legal teams regarding regulatory compliance, and partner with customer service representatives to ensure borrowers are informed about available options. Effective teamwork and clear communication are essential in this role to create workable repayment plans and achieve positive outcomes for both the lender and the borrower.

Job description

YOULAND

YouLand is a technology-enabled private lender founded in 2016 operating across the United States, reaching over $1.9 billion in cumulatively funded principal balance and servicing more than 1,600 investors and brokers. YouLand’s core product suite encompasses fix-and-flip, bridge, and ground-up construction loans targeting residential investors, developers, and brokers who require expedient and flexible capital without the friction of traditional bank underwriting. With a streamlined online application process coupled with simple documentation requirements, the company promptly closes deals in an environment where speed is paramount to success. In addition to operational excellence, YouLand’s edge is also driven by its use of AI tools across loan origination, underwriting, and capital markets – a technology-first approach that underpins the speed and consistency clients have come to expect.

ROLE

YouLand is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Asset Management Associate to lead YouLand’s post-close loan management and construction draw operations. This role sits at the intersection of borrowers and investors, ensuring proper execution of draw procedures in alignment with investor requirements, transparent reporting on loan performance and project progress, coordination of document and fund transfers, and surfacing risks before they become realized issues.

This role serves as a primary point of contact across active borrower, take-out investors, and internal underwriting and capital partners, allowing for a large surface area of presence and opportunity for meaningful impact for both YouLand’s and external stakeholders. This role is expected to grow alongside the business, with a path towards owning and leading a post-close asset management unit as YouLand scales.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio Management

  • Own and coordinate post-close lender and investor responsibilities, including payment tracking, escrow management, and borrower interface
  • Proactively monitor borrower compliance with loan terms, including payments, maturity, taxes and insurance, and project timelines
  • Oversee mortgage loan servicing, servicing transfer, and maintenance
  • Support internal build-out of servicing workflows, tools, and processes in conjunction with product and engineering teams

Risk Monitoring

  • Create and implement stage tracking for active asset management to have visibility into and ability to action interventions with loss mitigation, liquidation paths, and regular scheduled investor reporting
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders, brokers, and account executives to action interventions, including borrower reach-outs, coordination of required documentation, and execution of loss mitigation strategies such as maturity extensions, modifications, and deferrals

Capital Partner & Internal Reporting

  • Coordinate, reconcile, and support accurate data transmission and records with servicing data and loan management systems
  • Generate, check, and present reports on loan performance, draw activity, and servicing metrics
  • Productionize bespoke client-specific reporting through repeatable processes and robust data reconciliation

Draw Management and Disbursements

  • Review and process draw requests for construction loans, ensuring accuracy via established controls and compliance with defined budgets
  • Coordinate with inspectors, contractors, borrowers, title, and internal finance functions to verify completion metrics prior to disbursements
  • Manage on and off-shore team members on draw processing and disbursements and iterate on process enhancements
  • Communicate effectively between borrowers, capital take-out partners, and internal stakeholders, understand borrower and investor incentives and clearly articulate requirements and adjustments
  • Perform controls and scheduled internal audits with servicer and accounting records to ensure accurate servicing and asset management records

REQUIREMENTS

  • 3+ years of experience in loan servicing, construction loan administration, asset management, or related industries
  • Experience with construction project management and general contractors a plus
  • Strong understanding of mortgage operations, private lending, draw management, and construction budgets and tracking
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, expert in Excel and Powerpoint
  • Impeccable attention to detail and proclivity to design robust processes
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, ability to track and follow through on longer term initiatives requiring regular touchpoints, multiple stakeholders, and accountability
  • Comfortable working with and contributing to tech-enabled workflows, dashboards, and automation tools
  • Fluency in Mandarin Chinese preferred
  • Based locally or willingness to relocate. Firm is in-person in the Menlo Park, CA office

WHY YOULAND

  • Culture of autonomy and ownership allowing individuals to grow into leadership roles as the firm scales and team expands
  • Tangible impact as a result of relationship building, strong execution, and continual process enhancement
  • Benefits including paid health, vision, dental, and 401k matching
  • YouLand is proud to be an equal opportunity lender and employer. Execution of our mission is enhanced by building a team that reflects the diverse communities we serve, and we believe the best ideas come from a place of inclusion, respect, and trust.
