Position Summary
The Floating Care Assistant is responsible for providing direct resident care and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) across multiple units as assigned. This role supports nursing staff by monitoring resident stability and well-being while ensuring residents receive compassionate, high-quality care. Responsibilities include assisting with personal care, mobility, meals, transport, restorative activities, and maintaining a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. The Floating Care Assistant must demonstrate flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to adapt quickly to varying resident needs and work environments.
Required Qualifications
Current and valid STNA certification in the state of employment.
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Previous long-term care, rehabilitation, or skilled nursing experience preferred.
Ability to travel or float between assigned units and/or facilities as needed.
Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide direct personal care including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, shaving, toileting, peri/incontinence care, feeding, hair, nail, and foot care.
Assist residents with mobility activities including transfers, repositioning, ambulation, range of motion exercises, and use of mechanical lifts according to the plan of care.
Float between assigned units based on resident care needs.
Answer resident call lights promptly and courteously.
Encourage residents to participate in self-care and activities promoting independence and freedom of choice.
Deliver meal trays, snacks, fresh water, and assist residents with eating and hydration as needed.
Record meal intake and report concerns to nursing staff.
Take and record vital signs, weights, intake/output, and other observations as ordered.
Observe and report changes in residents' physical, emotional, or mental condition to the nurse immediately.
Assist with restorative and rehabilitation activities as outlined in the resident's plan of care.
Ensure resident rooms and care areas remain clean, organized, and safe.
Change bed linens and handle clean and soiled laundry according to facility policy.
Use wheelchairs, geri chairs, positioning devices, and other supportive equipment safely and properly.
Provide transportation for residents within the facility as needed.
Maintain resident dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times.
Follow infection control policies, safety procedures, and resident rights guidelines.
Report complaints, grievances, incidents, abuse, neglect, or safety concerns immediately to the supervisor.
Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement initiatives.
Adhere to facility dress code and professional conduct standards.
Perform all other duties as assigned by Administration.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift, transfer, reposition, or assist residents up to 50 pounds with assistance.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move for extended periods.
Ability to push wheelchairs, beds, and medical equipment safely.
Work Environment
Work is performed in long-term care, skilled nursing, and rehabilitation settings. The position may involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and medical equipment in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Schedule Expectations
Full-time, part-time, and PRN positions may be available.
Weekend and holiday rotation may be required.
Must be willing to work flexible shifts and float between assignments.
