Is freight forwarder a good career?

A freight forwarding career involves coordinating the shipment of goods internationally, requiring skills in logistics, communication, and documentation. It offers opportunities for advancement and can be stable with industry growth, but it may involve irregular hours and handling complex regulations. Success often depends on industry knowledge, certifications, and experience with logistics software.

What is logistics freight forwarding?

Logistics freight forwarding is the process of organizing and managing the shipment of goods from one place to another, typically across international borders. Freight forwarders act as intermediaries between shippers and transportation services, coordinating the movement of cargo by air, sea, rail, or road. They handle important tasks such as negotiating freight charges, booking cargo space, preparing shipping and customs documentation, and ensuring compliance with regulations. Their expertise helps companies navigate the complexities of global trade and move goods efficiently and cost-effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Logistics Freight Forwarder, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Logistics Freight Forwarder, you need in-depth knowledge of global shipping regulations, documentation, and supply chain management, often supported by a degree in logistics or relevant certifications. Familiarity with freight management systems, customs software, and international trade platforms is typically required. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for managing shipments and client relationships. These skills ensure timely, compliant, and cost-effective movement of goods in a complex, fast-paced global marketplace.

While both roles require knowledge of international trade, freight forwarding manages the overall shipment process, whereas customs brokers handle customs documentation and clearance.

How much do freight forwarders make?

Freight forwarders typically earn between $40,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced professionals with certifications can earn higher salaries, especially in logistics hubs or with specialized skills.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in logistics freight forwarding, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in logistics freight forwarding often encounter challenges such as navigating complex international regulations, managing tight delivery schedules, and coordinating with multiple carriers. To address these issues, strong organizational skills, up-to-date knowledge of customs requirements, and effective communication with global partners are essential. Leveraging technology for tracking shipments and staying proactive with contingency planning can also help minimize disruptions and ensure smooth operations.

What qualifications do I need to be a freight forwarder?

To become a freight forwarder, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with knowledge of logistics, transportation, and customs regulations. Many employers prefer candidates with certifications such as the Certified Transportation Professional (CTP) or similar credentials. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and proficiency with logistics software are also important for success in this role.

What is the highest paying logistics job?

  • Own full P&L responsibility for the Houston station with direct reporting to regional leadership
  • Manage door-to-door freight execution including routing, pricing, compliance, and delivery performance
  • Drive retention and expansion of key client relationships across high-value verticals including Oil & Gas, Industrial Projects, Chemicals, and Automotive
  • Negotiate directly with air and ocean carriers to secure competitive rates and space allocation
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with TSA, FMC, CBP, and internal audit standards
  • Report on financial, operational, and customer performance metrics with full KPI ownership
  • Partner with commercial teams on RFQs, client onboarding, and strategic trade lane development
  • Act as the regional lead for gateway optimization and cross-functional process alignment

Required Experience

  • 8+ years in international freight forwarding with a focus on air and ocean services
  • 3+ years in a branch or station leadership role with full operational and commercial control
  • Proven ability to manage P&L and drive sustained GP growth
  • Expertise in U.S. customs procedures, export control, TSA compliance, and FMC regulation
  • Hands-on experience with CargoWise or a comparable TMS
  • Strong leadership presence and ability to drive accountability at all levels
  • Track record of transforming station-level performance through disciplined execution

What’s on the Table

  • Strategic command of a national gateway with visibility at the executive level
  • Autonomy to build, shape, and scale the Houston station to flagship status
  • Direct influence on regional growth and trade lane development strategy
  • Base salary of $170,000+ plus station bonus and full benefits
  • Privately held organization with global reach and zero red tape
