Position Summary

The Scale House Attendant is responsible for accurately weighing, recording, and processing all incoming and outgoing vehicles at the landfill, transfer station, or waste processing facility. This position serves as the first point of contact for customers, drivers, and vendors while ensuring proper documentation, billing, cash handling, and compliance with company and regulatory requirements.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate computerized truck scale systems to accurately weigh inbound and outbound vehicles.
  • Verify customer information, material types, and disposal destinations.
  • Determine the proper classification of materials to ensure accurate billing and compliance with facility acceptance guidelines.
  • Receive and process cash, credit card, account charges, and other forms of payment.
  • Issue receipts, tickets, and related documentation to customers and drivers.
  • Balance daily cash receipts and reconcile transactions.
  • Maintain accurate records of waste volumes, customer accounts, and daily transactions.
  • Direct customers and drivers to appropriate disposal, unloading, or recycling areas.
  • Monitor incoming loads and notify site management of unusual, prohibited, or special waste materials.
  • Assist with required documentation and reporting for special waste acceptance.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls and provide information regarding operating hours, accepted materials, pricing, and site procedures.
  • Maintain organized records and filing systems in accordance with company policies.
  • Ensure the scale house, office, and surrounding work area remain clean and professional.
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, customers, site personnel, and management.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, data entry, reporting, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • One (1) year of customer service, cashiering, administrative support, or scale operation experience preferred.
  • Previous experience in waste management, landfill operations, transportation, logistics, or construction industries is a plus.
  • Experience handling cash and balancing receipts preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to accurately enter and maintain data records.
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and scale software systems.
  • Basic mathematical and accounting skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a scale house office environment with regular interaction with drivers and customers.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions when assisting customers or inspecting loads.
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, noise, odors, and heavy equipment operations.
  • Required to work Saturdays, some holidays, or modified schedules based on operational needs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while operating computer and scale systems.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach as needed throughout the workday.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Visual ability to inspect loads and read documents, computer screens, and scale tickets.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and by telephone.
