What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Locum Remote Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Locum Remote Project Manager, you need strong project management expertise, organizational skills, and typically a bachelor's degree and relevant certifications such as PMP. Familiarity with project management software like Asana, Trello, or MS Project, along with remote collaboration tools such as Slack and Zoom, is crucial. Excellent communication, adaptability, and self-motivation set outstanding candidates apart in this flexible role. These skills ensure effective project delivery, seamless remote teamwork, and the ability to adapt quickly to new teams and environments.

What are some common challenges faced by locum remote project managers, and how can they be addressed?

Locum remote project managers often face challenges such as quickly adapting to new teams, understanding project scopes on short notice, and building trust with stakeholders from a distance. To address these, it's important to establish clear communication channels early on, set expectations with both the team and stakeholders, and leverage digital collaboration tools to stay organized and visible. Proactively seeking feedback and scheduling regular check-ins can also help ensure alignment and smooth project progress despite the temporary and remote nature of the role.

What is a Locum Remote Project Manager?

A Locum Remote Project Manager is a professional who temporarily fills in as a project manager, often working remotely to oversee projects for organizations. These roles are typically contract-based and are meant to provide coverage during periods of staff absence, increased workload, or while a permanent hire is being sought. Locum project managers handle tasks such as planning, executing, and closing projects, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met. Their remote nature allows them to work from anywhere, using digital tools to coordinate with teams. This flexibility makes them valuable for companies needing project leadership on a temporary basis.

  • Interpret SCADA contract requirements and determine scope, compliance, deviations, and change impacts in alignment with SOLV standards.

  • Coordiante cross-functional project teams, including engineers, technicians, subcontractors, and 3rd party SCADA providers, by providing task direction, facilitating collaboration, and ensuring alignment with project goals and requirements.

  • Serve as the senior project point of contact for Owners, utilities, vendors, and internal SOLV teams.

  • Lead system design reviews, commissioning coordination, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) activities, ensuring technical and contractual alignment.

  • Develop, maintain, and manage project schedules to ensure SCADA activities do not delay the overall project's critical milestones. Develop and execute recovery and mitigation plans when required.

  • Proactively identify, assess, and manage technical, commercial, and execution risks, escalating issues when appropriate while driving mitigation strategies.

  • Oversee project documentation, including RFIs, change requests, and action tracking, ensuring timely resolution and alignment across stakeholders.

  • Work closely with field teams to ensure accurate, timely, and high-quality installation of SCADA system components.

  • Maintain and manage senior-level relationships with SOLV Energy business partners, clients, and industry vendors.

  • Prepare and manage monthly cost reporting and forecasting for assigned projects.

  • Reinforce and help drive SOLV best practices in project scheduling, cost tracking, and reporting.

  • Apply advanced judgment in managing complex execution conditions and resolving cross-functional project challenges.

  • Lead project closeout and lessons learned, and drive implementation of improvements that enhance future project execution.

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of SCADA project management processes, tools, and best practices within OTS/SCADA.

  • Stay informed of industry trends, pricing, and competitive dynamics and apply insights to improve project outcomes.

Objectives or Goals to Measure Performance:

  • Successfully deliver complex projects within contracted scope, while managing schedule, budget, and risk.

  • Maintain high levels of customer/client and project stakeholder satisfaction, including Owners, field teams, and internal SOLV partners, on complex or high-visibility projects.

  • Enable SCADA and Network engineers to independently manage their project responsibilities.

  • Demonstrate leadership in resolving complex execution challenges related to contracted scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Actively promote collaboration, knowledge sharing, and execution best practices across PM teams.

  • Provide informal mentorship and guidance to Project Managers.

  • Support onboarding and development of new PMs through coaching and knowledge sharing.

  • Drive consistent application of SOLV project management standards and processes.

  • Build and sustain strong relationships with customers, vendors, and internal partners.

Minimum Skills or Experience Requirements:

  • Proven experience managing multiple, complex projects within multidisciplinary teams.

  • 2-6 years of project management experience, including utility-scale PV and BESS projects.

  • Advanced knowledge of SCADA system design, setup, commissioning, and support.

  • PMP certification preferred but not required.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage cost budgets, resources, and risk on complex projects.

  • Strong experience in escalation management, conflict resolution, and decision-making.

  • Proficiency in ERP systems for cost control, forecasting, and change management (e.g., CMiC).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.
