What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Localization Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Localization Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, software development, and an understanding of internationalization (i18n) principles, often supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with localization tools (such as SDL Trados, memoQ, or XLIFF), programming languages (like Python, JavaScript, or C++), and version control systems is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable you to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams. These skills ensure accurate adaptation of products for global markets, maintaining both software functionality and cultural relevance.

What is localization engineering?

Localization engineering is the process of adapting software, websites, or digital content to meet the linguistic, cultural, and technical requirements of a specific target market or region. Localization engineers work closely with translators, developers, and project managers to ensure that products function correctly in different languages and locales. Their responsibilities often include preparing files for translation, maintaining localization tools, managing workflows, and addressing technical challenges such as text expansion, encoding, or formatting issues. The goal is to deliver a seamless user experience that feels natural to users in each target region.

What is the difference between Localization Engineering vs Localization Specialist?

AspectLocalization EngineeringLocalization Specialist
CredentialsTechnical degrees, certifications in software or localization toolsLanguage degrees, translation certifications
Work EnvironmentSoftware development teams, technical projectsTranslation agencies, content teams
Employer & IndustryTech companies, gaming, software firmsPublishing, media, translation services
Primary FocusDeveloping and maintaining localization tools and pipelinesTranslating and adapting content for target markets

Localization Engineering focuses on creating and maintaining technical tools for localization, while Localization Specialists handle content translation and adaptation. Both roles are essential in the localization process but differ in technical versus linguistic focus.

What are some common challenges faced by Localization Engineers during the software release cycle?

Localization Engineers often face challenges such as tight deadlines, managing multiple language assets, and ensuring that localized content integrates seamlessly with the original software. Coordinating with developers, translators, and QA teams requires strong communication skills to resolve issues like text expansion, encoding problems, or UI misalignment across languages. Proactively using automation tools and maintaining clear documentation can help streamline the workflow and minimize last-minute surprises during releases.

Job description

Why Join Seegrid?
Seegrid is the leading provider of Physical AI for material handling. Our solution includes autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), fleet management software, actionable analytics, and best-in-class services and support. Our technology is proven. Our AMRs have safely driven millions of autonomous miles in real-world production facilities. We are seeking energetic, bright, and friendly people to help achieve our vision: to fortify global supply chains and create profitable economies with safe, seamless, and smart mobile robotics solutions.
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Product Manager to help define the product strategy and roadmap for our AMR platforms. This includes our AMR vehicle hardware, on-board application software, and accessories. You will work on a highly collaborative product management team and cross-functionally with engineering, sales, and operations teams to define what we build, why we build it, and how it creates value for our customers. This is an individual contributor role that reports to the Director of Product Management.
Our AMR lineup spans three core form factors: the Tow Tractor for heavy payload transport, the Lift RS1 for low-lift pallet handling up to 6 feet, and the Lift CR1 for high-reach applications up to 15 feet and 4,000 lbs. Each AMR runs on our proprietary autonomy stack and is managed through Fleet Central, our enterprise fleet management software platform. The portfolio is rounded out by a growing set of accessories including auto-chargers and batteries barcode scanners, handshake sensors, and hitch-mounts (auto and manual). In addition to our current offering, several new products are in development intended to expand our addressable market into new applications and customer segments.
Success in this role requires strong product and market experience, backed by the technical depth needed to work credibly with engineering teams building complex AMR systems for diverse industrial environments.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Define and maintain the product roadmap for Seegrid's AMR vehicle hardware, on-board application software, and accessories
  • Identify opportunities for new products and improvements to existing ones through customer research, competitive analysis, technology trends, and ongoing performance monitoring of our live fleet
  • Engage directly with customers to lead discovery, identify high-value use cases, and validate product decisions through a deep understanding of their personas, workflows, constraints, and ROI requirements
  • Translate complex customer needs into clear product requirements documents (PRDs) that engineering teams can execute against, spanning both hardware and on-board software
  • Partner closely with engineering teams to ensure product specifications are feasible, cost-effective, and deliverable; together with hardware and operations teams manage hardware vendors, component selection, and long-lead-time risk mitigation
  • Drive alignment across engineering, sales, and operations teams on product priorities and release readiness
  • Define and track product performance metrics including utilization, availability, MTBF, deployment times, customer support trends, and customer ROI realization to drive continuous product improvement
  • Track product investment against revenue generated, monitor progress to breakeven, and report on internal ROI to ensure our product portfolio delivers measurable business value

Required Experience:
  • BS in a technical/analytic field or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years of product management experience and a proven track record shipping products driven by deeply integrated hardware and software systems
  • From our previous industry experience, you have a strong understanding of commercial AMR concepts including localization, mapping, planning, control, safety standards, security, power management, fleet software, interoperability standards, networking, enterprise integrations, electro-mechanical devices, and complex deployments
  • Proven ability to engage directly with enterprise customers, lead structured discovery, and translate field insights into actionable product decisions
  • Strong requirements discipline; able to translate ambiguous problems into crisp scope, measurable success criteria, and actionable release plans
  • Demonstrated ability to align cross-functional teams and to influence outcomes without direct authority
  • Exceptional communication skills; able to distill complex ideas into clear, compelling messages and know how to tailor them for the respective audience
  • Financial fluency; comfortable building business cases, tracking product investment, and analyzing ROI to support data-driven product decisions
  • Genuine passion for robotics and a relentless commitment to delivering high-quality reliable systems

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience delivering AMRs at scale in real-world industrial environments
  • Experience in manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, e-commerce, or a related market
