Job description


Position Summary:
This position provides general labor and research farm support for the Arkansas Valley Research Center. Responsibilities include: Research field production and maintenance (i.e., planting, irrigation, and general research plot upkeep), experimental crop planning and harvesting, and general maintenance and repair of the facilities, grounds and equipment.
Description of Work Unit: The Arkansas Valley Research Center was established to serve the research needs of the irrigated farming area of southeast Colorado known as the Arkansas Valley, extending from Pueblo County on the west to the Kansas border.
Essential Job Duties:
• Research Farm Support: Aids in the preparation of research field experiments and crops. Provides planting, irrigating, cultivating, roguing, harvesting, storing crops and various tasks important to the research initiatives at this station.
• General Operations Maintenance: Maintenance, repair, painting, cleaning, organizing, and/or replacement of facilities, grounds, and equipment. Many tasks are to be completed prior to usage, while others may arise unexpectedly. Other similar duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Employees must be able to provide documentation to their employers to show their identity and prove their authorization to work.
• Experience in safe and proficient operation of farm and other machinery such as small engines, rototiller/weed eater, power tools and hand tools or the ability to learn.
• Demonstrated communication skills and ability to understand both verbal and written instructions (English).
• Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with or without direct supervision.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include: some heavy lifting (up to 50 lbs.) on a frequent basis and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, and handling.
• Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include: working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals used in weed/pest control and fertilization.
• Ability to accommodate Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) and to meet seasonal demands as well as varied work hours extending in night and/or weekend.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience general facility maintenance.
• Experience working with large-scale irrigation systems.
• Experience in a research or compliance-oriented environment.
• Working knowledge of agriculture crops relevant to the AVRC.
• Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by start date.
