Job description

LYNX is seeking a customer-focused individual who enjoys serving the public and making a difference in their community. As a Transit Bus Operator also known at LYNX as a Bus Operator B, you will receive paid training to prepare for a career operating public transit vehicles throughout Central Florida. No CDL is required to apply. Successful candidates will learn how to safely transport passengers, provide excellent customer service, and support LYNX's mission of delivering reliable transportation services to the communities we serve.

Information you need to know before applying:
โ€ข You must possess a valid Florida driver's license and a clean driving record
โ€ข No suspension or revocation of driver's license for moving violations within the past 3 years
โ€ข No more than 3 points on your license within the past three years
โ€ข Must be able to workdays, nights, Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and any hours assigned
โ€ข Must be 21 years of age
โ€ข High School diploma or GED preferred
โ€ข Must be able to successfully pass the LYNX Bus Operator Training Program
Training is 8 weeks long
Attendance and punctuality are mandatory
โŒ No absences allowed during training
Hours during training vary and may start as early as 4:00am including some weekends
Any candidates that receive a conditional job offer will need to provide the following:
โ€ข Provide copies of credentials such as diplomas and licenses
โ€ข Complete and pass a DOT pre-employment drug test and DOT physical examination and receive a Medical Examiner's Certificate with at least a one-year expiration date
โ€ข Successfully pass a thorough pre-employment background check, including criminal background and employment verifications
โ€ข Have an acceptable driving record

Job Summary:
Under minimal supervision, Bus Operator B's transport passengers by operating public transit vehicles on regularly scheduled links connecting with fixed-route and rail services and perform on-demand passenger pick-ups and drop-offs while observing all federal, state, and municipal traffic laws, observing all safety rules, and strictly adhering to time schedules.
This position is considered safety-sensitive and subject to the provisions of the Substance Abuse Program Policy for Safety Sensitive Positions.
Essential Functions:
  • Provides courteous and professional customer service.
  • Performs vehicle inspections as required.
  • Respectfully provides accurate information to passengers related to the use of LYNX service.
  • Resolves passenger disputes in a courteous manner.
  • Operates wheelchair lift equipment and assists disabled passengers.
  • Announces bus stops in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Communicates with dispatch, road supervision and emergency vehicles via radio equipment.
  • Adheres to LYNX work rules, policies and procedures.
  • Observes all federal, state, and municipal traffic laws. Observes all safety rules.
  • Adheres to assigned routes and time schedules.
  • Ensures proper fares are collected. Issues slips for fare refunds and issues and collects transfers.
  • Verifies that appropriate passes are being used by customers.
  • Prepares related written reports and documents as required.
  • Assists customers during emergency accidents or incidents.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license and clean driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a DOT drug screen and DOT physical with a one-year DOT card.
  • Must be able to workdays, nights, Saturdays and any hours assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Knowledge of Florida Traffic Laws.
  • Working knowledge and skills to use a computer and communication equipment.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to safely operate LYNX revenue and non-revenue vehicles.
  • Ability to adhere to route schedules while operating in mixed traffic conditions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public.
  • Ability to comply with the attendance requirements of the job.
  • Ability to read and write legibly in English, speak effectively, and understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to exhibit a professional, courteous demeanor.
  • Ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with those encountered in the course of work using principles of excellent customer service.

Work Environment and Special Considerations:
  • Current schedule includes working various shifts to include days, nights, and Saturdays.
  • Sundays and holidays may be a requirement in the future.
  • Must be able to physically sit for extended periods of time.
  • Employees in this position must comply with all requirements of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regarding the testing of safety sensitive employees. This position is considered safety-sensitive under FTA drug and alcohol regulations (49 CFR Part 655).
  • LYNX provides the community with much needed public transportation, and it is important for the Agency to resume its services as quickly and as safely as possible in the event of any natural, technological, or human-caused emergency or disaster. This position is considered a mission critical member of LYNX's emergency preparation and response efforts during an emergency or disaster and as such, requires 24-hour availability in the event of an emergency or disaster.
