Job Title: Diesel Mechanic – 2nd ShiftJob Description

Join a long‑standing independent diesel repair shop as a 2nd shift Diesel Mechanic, where you will perform repairs and maintenance on large, heavy‑duty diesel trucks. This is a long‑term opportunity in a retail shop environment that services a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, giving you the chance to broaden your skills across multiple diesel systems, components, and brands.

Responsibilities
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain large and heavy‑duty diesel trucks in a 2nd shift environment.
  • Perform a wide range of mechanical work including engine, transmission, and drivetrain repairs on diesel equipment.
  • Conduct inspections to identify mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair methods.
  • Use hand and air tools to disassemble, repair, and reassemble diesel engines and related components.
  • Service and repair trucks and trailers from multiple OEM brands, including engines and chassis systems.
  • Work on a variety of repair needs in a retail shop setting, handling diverse issues rather than repetitive fleet maintenance.
  • Follow shop procedures and safety practices while maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Collaborate with other mechanics to share knowledge and support complex repair projects.
  • Document work performed and communicate repair status and findings clearly to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Continuously develop technical skills by working on different makes and models of diesel trucks and related equipment.
Essential Skills
  • At least 2 years of experience as a mechanic working on automotive or diesel vehicles.
  • Minimum 1 year of hands‑on experience with at least one major diesel engine brand such as Detroit, CAT, or Mercedes.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, and related systems.
  • Proficiency using a personal set of hand and air tools to perform mechanical repairs.
  • Experience working as a diesel mechanic, diesel technician, or auto mechanic in a shop environment.
  • Ability to perform repairs on heavy‑duty trucks and semi‑truck equipment.
  • Capability to work independently on 2nd shift while meeting quality and safety standards.
  • Solid understanding of diesel engine operation and common failure points.
  • Reliable work habits and commitment to long‑term employment in a repair shop setting.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Diesel or auto mechanic certifications are preferred but not required.
  • Technical school education or a related tech school degree in diesel technology, automotive technology, or a similar field is beneficial.
  • Experience with OEM parts and repair procedures for major diesel engine and truck brands.
  • Familiarity with repair work on Western Star Trucks, Crane Carrier Trucks, and Landoll Trailers is a plus.
  • Background from institutions such as Universal Technical Institute or similar technical training programs is advantageous.
  • Willingness to expand skills by working on a wide variety of repair tasks rather than a single repetitive fleet assignment.
  • Comfort working in a small team of mechanics and learning from highly experienced diesel professionals.
Why Work Here?

You will join a long‑established, family‑owned diesel repair shop with decades of service to the regional trucking industry and a team that brings over a century of combined diesel experience. The environment emphasizes hands‑on learning, mentorship, and exposure to a broad range of trucks, trailers, and engine brands, giving you the opportunity to grow your skills quickly. As an authorized OEM dealer and a unique provider for select truck and trailer brands in the state, the shop offers stable work, diverse repair challenges, and the chance to build a long‑term career in a close‑knit, professional setting.

Work Environment

The role is based in a small semi‑truck diesel repair shop that has been serving the local trucking industry for 40 years. The shop operates as a retail facility, meaning it services and repairs a wide variety of issues on many different trucks and trailers rather than performing repetitive fleet maintenance. The team consists of approximately 10–12 mechanics, many of whom specialize in engine work and bring extensive diesel expertise, creating a supportive environment for mechanics with a few years of experience to continue learning. The shop is an authorized OEM dealer for parts and repairs for major diesel engines such as Caterpillar and Detroit, as well as for Western Star Trucks, Crane Carrier Trucks, and Landoll Trailers, including being the exclusive dealer in Minnesota for Crane Carrier Trucks and Landoll Trailers. You will work with heavy‑duty equipment, standard shop tools, and OEM components in a hands‑on setting, with expectations to follow standard shop safety practices and maintain appropriate work attire suitable for a diesel repair environment.
