At Schwab, you're empowered to make an impact on your career. Here, innovative thought meets creative problem solving, helping us "challenge the status quo" and transform the finance industry together.
We believe in the importance of in-office collaboration and fully intend for the selected candidate for this role to work on site in the specified location(s).
Workplace Services Engineering (WSE) is an organization within Schwab Technology Services that is embarking on a major transformation. We support Workplace Services, and we're shaping the future of how people experience financial well-being at work. We partner with leading employers to deliver innovative retirement, equity, and workplace financial solutions that help millions of participants build stronger financial futures. This is a fast-growing, high-impact business where scale meets purpose-where your work directly influences how people plan, save, invest, and succeed.
As a key growth engine for the firm, we're investing more than ever to expand our capabilities, modernize platforms, and elevate the experiences we deliver to employers and their employees. Our teams work at the intersection of technology, service, and financial expertise-supporting workplace clients with solutions that scale, adapt, and deliver meaningful outcomes. Here, your ideas help shape what's next for workplace financial services. If you're energized by solving complex problems, collaborating across disciplines, and making a real difference in the workplace services industry, you'll find your place here.
We are seeking an experienced Performance Engineer to play a key role in ensuring our applications meet rigorous performance, scalability, and reliability standards across both legacy on prem distributed systems and modern cloud native platforms. This engineer will work under the guidance of a Senior Performance Engineer while driving hands on performance testing, analysis, and optimization across complex environments.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Design, script, and execute load, stress, endurance, and scalability tests using tools such as JMeter and LoadRunner.
Build and maintain performance test scripts for both legacy distributed systems and microservices running on Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF).
  • Validate performance in hybrid architectures involving on prem systems, messaging layers, APIs, and cloud deployed services.
  • Use APM and monitoring tools (AppD, Splunk) to isolate bottlenecks in on prem systems, PCF hosted services, and integration points.
  • Conduct deep dive diagnostics across the stack: application code, JVM/CLR, database calls, queues, caches, and network paths.
  • Partner with senior engineers and architects when legacy constraints require creative performance tuning solutions.
  • Work cross functionally with development, QA, SRE, and architecture teams to ensure performance considerations are built into the SDLC.
  • Enhance performance testing automation, integrating scenarios into CI/CD pipelines across both on prem and PCF continuous delivery workflows.
  • Deliver clear, actionable performance reports illustrating system behavior across legacy and cloud environments.

What you have
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field.
  • 5+ years experience in IT/software, with dedicated performance engineering experience preferred.
  • Strong hands on experience with performance testing tools such as JMeter and LoadRunner.
  • Experience with monitoring/diagnostic tools: AppD, Splunk, or similar.
  • Strong programming skills in Java, Python, or C#. Shell scripting (Bash, PowerShell) for automation.
  • Experience working with legacy on prem distributed systems (Linux and Windows servers), including troubleshooting performance across multi-tier architectures.
  • Practical experience deploying, testing, or tuning applications on Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF).
  • Understanding of system architecture, cloud environments, and CI/CD.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tooling (e.g., GitHub Actions, Jenkins)
  • Working knowledge of databases and tuning for example Oracle and SQL Server
  • Knowledge of Internet protocols and technologies (HTTP, TCP/IP, DNS, FTP)

In addition to the salary range, this role is also eligible for bonus or incentive opportunities.
