What does a live streaming producer do?

A Live Streaming Producer oversees the planning, production, and execution of live broadcast events on digital platforms. They coordinate all aspects of the stream, including managing technical equipment, directing camera and audio crews, and ensuring a smooth viewer experience. Their responsibilities often include troubleshooting technical issues in real-time, working closely with talent and content creators, and optimizing the stream for various platforms. Live Streaming Producers play a crucial role in delivering high-quality, engaging live content to audiences online.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live streaming producer?

To thrive as a Live Streaming Producer, you need expertise in video production, streaming technology, and event coordination, often supported by a background in media, communications, or related fields. Familiarity with streaming platforms (such as OBS, vMix, or Wirecast), video switchers, audio equipment, and encoding software is crucial, along with any relevant technical certifications. Strong problem-solving, multitasking, and communication skills set top producers apart, enabling them to manage live events smoothly under pressure. These abilities ensure seamless, high-quality broadcasts that engage audiences and maintain professional standards.

What are some common challenges a live streaming producer faces during live broadcasts, and how can they be managed?

Managing these challenges typically involves thorough pre-event testing, having backup equipment and contingency plans, and maintaining clear communication with the production team. Staying calm under pressure and troubleshooting issues in real-time are essential skills, as is flexibility to adapt quickly to last-minute adjustments. Collaboration with technical staff and on-air talent ensures smooth live streaming experiences.

Job Summary:
Ilitch Companies is seeking a Coordinating Producer to lead day-to-day operations and long-term planning for the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings telecasts. This role involves leading the production team, collaborating with various departments, and serving as the primary liaison with MLB and NHL partners to deliver engaging content for fans.
Responsibilities:
• Act as the central liaison between on-air talent, production crews, internal IS+E stakeholders (sales, marketing, communications, community relations, digital/social media), and external partners at MLB and NHL for scheduling, planning, and execution of 140+ Tigers telecasts (starting 2026) and 70+ Red Wings telecasts (starting 2026-27).
• For Tigers broadcasts: Coordinate closely with MLB on all production elements – including talent integration, graphics, pre-/post-game content, and distribution – ensuring seamless alignment with organizational branding, fan experience goals, and the MLB-led production model.
• For Red Wings broadcasts: Provide direct oversight of full production (pre-game, in-game, post-game), guiding the producer, director, technical staff, and support personnel while leveraging MLB assistance where applicable.
• Develop and maintain broadcast standards, game formats, scripts, production calendars, and organizational procedures that support consistency and excellence across both telecasts.
• Lead pre-production planning, editorial meetings, and the creation/review of animations, graphics, edited video packages, and other elements sourced from internal video teams, outside vendors, and league partners.
• Ensure all broadcasts meet editorial, technical, operational, and compliance standards while integrating team marketing, branding, and sponsorship campaigns in ways that enhance content value.
• Partner with the media sales team to manage in-game sponsored inventory, maintain an up-to-date integration log, and ensure every partner activation adds meaningful value to the viewer experience.
• Conduct regular reviews with talent, producers, directors, and crew to evaluate performance, identify opportunities, and implement continuous improvement.
• Serve as a hands-on secondary/tertiary producer for select games across both sports to stay closely connected to the crew, identify pain points, and drive real-time solutions.
• Assist with problem-solving and troubleshooting during live broadcasts, escalating issues to management as appropriate.
• Work closely with Operations and Technical teams to ensure production needs are clearly communicated and met.
• Contribute to the television production budget process, including season-long estimates, ongoing expense tracking, and adherence to financial targets.
• Champion innovation in broadcast storytelling, graphics, data integration, and fan engagement features to elevate the viewer experience in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
• Oversee content creation and integration across platforms, guiding feature producers and collaborating with digital/social teams to extend broadcast reach and engagement.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Broadcasting, Communications, Journalism, or a related field.
• 7+ years of progressive experience in live sports television production, with at least some background producing or coordinating MLB and/or NHL broadcasts strongly preferred.
• Proven leadership and project-management skills; ability to prioritize, multitask, and thrive in a fast-paced, seasonal environment.
• Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills; comfortable working across departments and with external league partners.
• Deep knowledge of MLB and NHL rules, broadcasting best practices, and current industry trends (including specific enhancement with priority on streaming/DTC models).
• Technical proficiency with production tools (cameras, switchers, editing systems, graphics platforms, codecs, etc.) and Microsoft Office applications.
• Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret broadcast metrics and translate insights into actionable improvements.
• Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a passion for sports storytelling and fan-first content.
