What is the difference between Live In Unlicensed Architect vs Intern Architect?

AspectLive In Unlicensed ArchitectIntern Architect
CredentialsTypically no licensure, may have completed some education or trainingEnrolled in or recent graduate of architecture degree program
Work EnvironmentAssists with projects, often in residential or small-scale settings, may live on-siteSupports licensed architects, works in office or on-site, gaining experience
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in small firms or residential projects, less formalCommon in architecture firms, internships for students

While both roles involve working in architecture, a Live In Unlicensed Architect typically assists with projects without formal licensure and may live on-site, often in residential settings. An Intern Architect is a student or recent graduate gaining practical experience under supervision. The main difference lies in licensure status and career stage, with interns focusing on learning and licensure candidates working towards full registration.

Can I call myself an architect if I'm not licensed?

A live-in unlicensed architect cannot legally call themselves an architect or perform licensed architectural work, as the title is protected by law and requires proper licensing. While they may have relevant skills and experience, only licensed architects can officially use the title and sign off on projects. Unlicensed individuals can work in related roles but must avoid representing themselves as licensed architects.

What can you do with an architecture degree without a license?

A live-in unlicensed architect can work in roles such as design assistant, drafter, or project coordinator, supporting licensed architects and gaining experience. They can also pursue positions in construction management, interior design, or CAD drafting, but cannot independently sign or seal architectural plans or obtain certain licensure-dependent roles.

Can an unlicensed architect design a house?

A live-in unlicensed architect cannot legally sign or stamp house plans for construction, as licensing is required to approve architectural designs for building permits. However, they may assist in designing a house as part of a team or under supervision, but final approval and legal responsibility rest with a licensed architect or engineer. Knowledge of building codes and design skills are essential, but licensing is mandatory for official submission and approval processes.
