Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a Staff Float Pool position requiring an AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience.

Details
  • Staff Float Pool MedSurg position within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center
  • Will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation, which may include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, or MedSurg/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a), scheduled on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square (no self-scheduling)
  • 36 hours per week standard schedule
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units/patient locations (e.g., MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task, ICU-ER/ICU holds)
  • Telemetry monitored by dedicated Telemetry Techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • EMR: Cerner preferred
  • Equipment used includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Unit support includes CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist
Requirements
  • Active RN license (AL state or compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner experience required if experience is strictly ICU-based
  • Trauma/surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment (at least 1 year)
  • Skills may include wound care, chest tube management, NGT, PEG, trach care, ostomy/colostomy care, central line care, IV starts, and medication administration depending on unit assignment
  • Chemo certification preferred for MedSurg/Oncology unit
Additional Information
  • Provide direct patient care across a variety of MedSurg-related units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Oncology, Orthopedics, and Urology populations
  • Interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours as part of nursing responsibilities
  • Charge nurse support is available on the unit, though charge nurses rarely take a patient assignment
  • Orientation for new or returning travelers (gone 1+ year) includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved in advance, excluding facility blackout dates
  • Scrubs of any color are permitted
  • Parking is available in a designated parking deck (2nd through 4th levels)
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates are not accepted; candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility
  • Former staff must wait 6 months from their last shift before returning as a traveler
