Description

American Traveler is hiring a night-shift RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience with Epic or Cerner.

Details
  • Staff Float Pool MedSurg position within a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center, Level III NICU, and Primary Stroke Center
  • Home unit assigned on first day of orientation, with potential coverage in units such as Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and MedSurg/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient ratios typically range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
  • Handles a variety of patient populations including general surgery, vascular, neuroscience, oncology, orthopedic, and urology cases
  • RNs interpret and confirm telemetry strip readings every 4 hours, with continuous monitoring support from telemetry techs
  • EMR used is Cerner, with Epic experience also considered
  • Utilizes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00pm-7:00am), 36-48 hours per week on a 4-week self-scheduling cycle via Smart Square
  • Weekend rotation required, either every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units or patient locations (e.g., MedSurg to MedSurg, ICU tasks, or ER holds)
Requirements
  • Active RN license (AL state or Compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
  • Epic or Cerner EMR experience required; Cerner specifically required for candidates with strictly ICU background
  • Trauma or surgical experience preferred for certain unit assignments, including wound care, chest tube management, NGT, and IV skills
  • Chemotherapy certification preferred for oncology unit assignments
  • First-time travelers will be considered
Additional Information
  • Provide direct patient care including turning, bathing, and assisting with ADLs, particularly in units with lower patient ratios
  • Support staff on units includes CNAs, charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalists
  • Travelers new to the facility or returning after 1+ years receive 24 hours of classroom orientation and 24 hours on-unit training
  • Must live outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Facility maintains blackout dates throughout 2026 during which time off requests require additional approval
  • Up to 7 days of requested time off can be approved in advance, excluding blackout dates
  • Scrubs of any color are permitted
  • Free parking available in designated parking deck levels
  • Former staff members must wait 6 months from their last shift worked before returning as a travel employee
