Live In Support Worker information

What is a live in support worker?

Live in support workers are professionals who reside in the home of individuals needing assistance due to age, disability, or health conditions. They provide support with daily living tasks such as personal care, medication management, meal preparation, and household chores. Their presence allows people to maintain independence and remain in their own homes rather than moving to residential care facilities. Live in support workers often offer emotional companionship and help clients engage in social or community activities. The role can vary depending on the individual's needs and the support worker's qualifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in support worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Support Worker, you need a solid understanding of personal care practices, safeguarding protocols, and ideally a relevant qualification such as a Care Certificate or NVQ in Health and Social Care. Familiarity with care planning software, medication administration systems, and assistive devices is often required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, patience, and resilience help build trust and foster a supportive environment for clients. These abilities are essential for delivering consistent, high-quality care and improving the well-being and independence of those you support.

What are the typical challenges faced by a live in support worker and how can they be managed?

Live In Support Workers often face challenges such as maintaining professional boundaries while living in close proximity to clients, adapting to varying routines, and managing emotional stress from supporting individuals with complex needs. Effective communication, self-care routines, and regular supervision or team meetings can help manage these challenges. Many organizations also provide ongoing training and access to support networks to ensure workers feel equipped and supported in their roles.

Job description

Ready for a career in an organization where you can make a real impact-and still have evenings and weekends to yourself?

Monday-Friday | No On-Call | Flex Work Arrangements | Build Lasting Change Through Meeting the Needs of Our Community Members

Whether you're a recent graduate looking for your first role or an experienced caseworker or human services professional seeking meaningful work with better work-life balance, we'd love to meet you!

About Us

Siloam Mission is a Christian humanitarian non-profit organization supporting Manitobans who are experiencing homelessness, poverty, and who struggle with mental health challenges, physical and cognitive disabilities, addictions, or trauma. Founded in 1987, the mission provides emergency shelter, meals and clothing, supportive housing, and a variety of healing, support, and recovery services. Our comprehensive services help people find hope, recover, and transition to build a more hopeful future.

At Siloam Mission, we believe housing changes lives. As a Community Support Case Worker, you'll walk alongside people experiencing homelessness as they move into permanent housing and build the supports they need to remain successfully housed. You'll have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships and support long-term change through person-centered, trauma-informed, and strengths-based case management.

This is an ideal opportunity whether you're bringing years of experience or just launching your career and want meaningful work without rotating shifts, overnight work, or on-call responsibilities.

Changing Lives Changes Everything

Why You'll Love This Role

  • Monday to Friday schedule with evenings and weekends free
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Supportive team that values collaboration, learning, and professional growth
  • Build meaningful, long-term relationships with participants
  • Work within a respected Housing First program
  • Ongoing professional development and mentorship opportunities
  • Work both in the community and in the office-every day is different

What You'll Do

  • Develop individualized service plans and achievable goals collaboratively with participants
  • Partner with participants to identify and achieve their shelter and housing goals
  • Provide ongoing case management using trauma-informed and harm reduction approaches
  • Support participants to connect with healthcare services, financial assistance, employment, legal and family services.
  • Advocate alongside participants as they navigate complex systems
  • Build relationships with landlords and community partners
  • Support participants in their homes, throughout the community, and at Siloam Mission
  • Document participant progress and contribute to outcomes reporting
  • Celebrate successes along the way!

What We're Looking For

  • Our ideal candidate is someone who:
  • Has completed a diploma or degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or a related field
  • Is passionate about supporting people experiencing homelessness or housing instability
  • Builds trust easily and communicates with empathy and professionalism
  • Believes in strengths-based, trauma-informed, person-centered practice
  • Is non-judgemental and able to work within a harm-reduction framework
  • Enjoys solving problems and connecting people with resources
  • Works well independently while being part of a collaborative team
  • Experience in homelessness, mental health, addictions, or Housing First is an asset; we also welcome recent graduates who bring strong placement, practicum, volunteer, or other transferable experience.

Requirements

  • Valid Class 5F driver's license
  • Reliable vehicle and acceptable driver's abstract
  • Comfortable working in the community and visiting participants in their homes
  • Ability to occasionally assist with housing moves or unit clean-ups

Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with flexible work arrangements

Our work is grounded in person-centered care, trauma-informed practice, harm reduction, and the Housing First philosophy. We invest in our staff because we know that supported employees provide the best support to our community members.
