What are some common challenges faced by individuals working in a Live-In Storage Facility role, and how can they be addressed?

Individuals working as live-in managers or caretakers at storage facilities often face challenges such as maintaining privacy while being on-call after hours, handling emergency situations, and managing customer interactions at all hours. Balancing personal time with work responsibilities is crucial, as residents may need to respond to facility issues outside of standard business hours. Effective time management, clear communication with facility owners, and setting boundaries for non-emergency issues can help address these challenges and promote a healthy work-life balance.

Are there people living in storage units?

Live-in storage jobs typically involve managing or maintaining storage facilities and do not include living in storage units. It is generally illegal and unsafe to reside in storage units, and such practices are prohibited by most storage facility policies. Employees may work in the environment but do not live on-site in storage units.

It is important to confirm specific job requirements and employer policies regarding housing arrangements.

Can you go live in a storage unit?

Live-in storage units are generally not permitted as they are intended for short-term storage and lack necessary amenities and safety features for habitation. Job description

Site Maintenance Manager – Self Storage

Bayfield & Durango, CO | Full-Time | Second Place Storage

Second Place Storage is hiring a hands-on Site Manager to handle maintenance and upkeep at our self-storage facilities in Bayfield and Durango. This is a physical, boots-on-the-ground role - our remote team handles all customer service, leasing, and billing, so your job is keeping the properties clean, well-maintained, and move-in ready.

Most work is done independently on a flexible schedule. You'll spend the majority of your time at our two Bayfield properties, with regular trips to a third property on the east side of Durango.

The Details

Property Locations: Bayfield Town Center, Gem Village, Grandview (East Durango)

Pay: $18–22/hour, depending on experience

Schedule: Full-time (~40 hours/week), flexible scheduling with the ability to respond promptly to urgent issues

Travel & Transportation: You'll use your own reliable vehicle to start, reimbursed at a standard mileage rate; a company truck may be provided long term. Ideally, you live within 10–15 minutes of Bayfield Town Center.

What You'll Do

You'll own the physical condition and appearance of the properties. Day-to-day work varies, but includes task like:

  • Preparing vacated units for rent so they're clean and move-in ready
  • Completing small repairs (door latches, hardware, etc.), and handling general upkeep
  • Grounds work: mowing, weed-whacking, snow removal, sweeping/leaf-blowing, trash pickup, and dump runs
  • Walking the properties regularly and catching maintenance, safety, or appearance issues early
  • Occasionally assisting customers on site (showing units, providing access) when asked by the remote team

What We're Looking For

  • Comfortable with physical, outdoor work in all weather; able to lift 50 lbs
  • Handy with power tools and lawn equipment, including using a grinder to cut locks
  • Meticulous, with a genuinely high standard for how a property should look - you notice what others miss and keep things sharp without anyone checking your work
  • Dependable and self-directed, with your own reliable transportation
  • Basic tech competence - comfortable using a smartphone for photos, texting, and simple reporting

Experience in maintenance, landscaping, or facilities work is preferred. Desire to learn, a strong work ethic, and dependability are much more important than past experience.

Room to Grow

We operate storage facilities across Pagosa Springs, Bayfield, Durango, and Aztec — currently 9 locations and growing. For the right person, this role can expand into overseeing maintenance and appearance across the full portfolio.
