What is a Live In Solar Designer?

A Live In Solar Designer is a professional who specializes in designing solar energy systems for residential or commercial properties, often living on-site or nearby to oversee the project closely. Their job involves assessing the property, designing efficient solar panel layouts, and ensuring the system meets both client needs and regulatory requirements. By being present on-site, they can provide real-time solutions, manage installation processes, and troubleshoot any issues that arise. This hands-on approach helps ensure the solar system is optimized for the specific location and client requirements.

What is the difference between Live In Solar Designer vs Solar Installer?

AspectLive In Solar DesignerSolar Installer
CredentialsRelevant certifications in solar design, CAD, and electrical workElectrical or HVAC certifications, safety training
Work EnvironmentDesign office, client meetings, remote site assessmentsOn-site installation, outdoor work, physical labor
Industry UsageDesign phase of solar projects, planning and engineeringInstallation and commissioning of solar systems

Live In Solar Designers focus on planning and designing solar systems, often working in offices and client consultations. Solar Installers execute the physical installation of solar panels on-site. While both roles require electrical knowledge and safety certifications, their work environments and responsibilities differ significantly, with designers concentrating on planning and installers on hands-on installation tasks.

  • Translate client and project requirements into detailed electrical designs and CAD-based engineering drawings.
  • Coordinate with clients to manage project schedules, track budgets, and ensure successful project delivery.
  • Represent EVS in client meetings, providing technical expertise and guidance on PV and BESS electrical engineering.
  • Develop and oversee Issue for Construction (IFC) electrical plan sets for utility-scale solar and energy storage facilities.
  • Utilize tools such as AutoCAD, wire schedules, Bill of Materials spreadsheets, and PVSyst to support project design.
  • Apply deep knowledge of PV and BESS components including modules, racking, inverters, battery systems, MV cable, and balance-of-system equipment.
  • Ensure designs meet applicable NEC, UL, IEEE, and other industry standards including NEC Articles 110, 690, 706, 300, 240, and 250.
  • Collaborate with power studies engineers to ensure accurate inputs for system analysis and electrical studies.
  • Research emerging renewable energy technologies and apply insights to improve project design and optimization.
  • Lead and mentor engineering team members, supporting technical growth and project execution.
  • Manage team capacity planning and monitor utilization to support consistent project delivery.
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams to align electrical design with civil, structural, and project management requirements.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience working as a Lead Engineer, Project Engineer, or Project Manager in the utility-scale solar or BESS industry.
  • Strong experience producing electrical design packages for utility-scale PV and BESS projects.
  • Expert-level proficiency with AutoCAD and drafting of electrical plans, site plans, and construction details.
  • Deep understanding of PV and BESS balance-of-plant systems and monitoring infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals and relevant industry codes and standards.
  • Familiarity with power study tools such as ETAP, AmpCalc, SKM, or CYMCAP is valuable but not required.
