Job Summary 

The purpose of the Solar Installation Instructor Trainee position is to participate in the Goodwill Clean Tech Accelerator (GCTA) Train-the-Trainer (T3) Program. The Instructor Trainee will shadow two student training cohorts taught by a training partner and will complete training required to become certified to deliver instruction within the GCTA program. 

Key responsibilities during this training period include: 

  • Supporting classroom and lab instruction in solar installation and solar electrical systems. 

  • Leading and facilitating Career Fundamentals and Work Readiness training modules. 

  • Assisting in establishing a productive learning environment for students 

In addition to instructional responsibilities, the Instructor Trainee will assist in building and maintaining relationships with employers in solar, construction, and clean-tech industries to support job placement opportunities for program graduates. 

Essential Job Functions 

• Deliver technical solar training curricula to trainees (students) from diverse backgrounds  

• Lead and teach classroom/lab workshop instruction  

• Identify additional training needs and opportunities for trainees  

• Serve as a leader and a role model, demonstrating high values, and mentoring junior staff members  

• Lead or assist in on-site solar and solar electrical installation work  

• Communicate regularly with manager and team, including providing feedback and sharing successes/challenges in   order to ensure team coordination, cooperation, and collaboration; a happy, productive work environment; and achievement of annual goals 

• Build and maintain relationships with employers to support graduate job placement in aligned industries. 

 • Other job duties as assigned 

Education and Experience 

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. 

  • OSHA Certified Preferred  

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in residential solar electric system installation / troubleshooting and minimum of 1 year leading an installation crew preferred. 

  •  An aptitude for mechanical and technical content can likely transfer through self-study from fields such as electricians, power line workers, networking, electrical engineering technologists, or electro-mechanical engineering technologists. 

  •  

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Ability to manage and keep attention of a cohort of trainees during 8 hour training sessions 

  • Passion for Goodwill’s (GW) mission related to renewable energy, community development, and helping families and communities in need 

  • Highly reliable, accountable, and detail-oriented  

  • Self-starter and ability to work independently as well as in a team 

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills (ability to work well with co-workers, and ability to represent GW positively)  

  • Strong teamwork, organizational, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills 

  • MUST be able to successfully pass a pre-employment background screen

The training program is designed to ensure that the Instructor Trainee is fully prepared and certified to deliver high-quality technical training within the GCTA program. The training provided to the Instructor Trainee includes: course content & admin sessions, shadowing, mock-teach backs, co-instructor teaching & exams/evaluations.
