Job description

Job Title: Residence Hall Graduate Assistant

Department: Life & Career Studies Program

Reports To: Life & Career Studies Program Coordinator

Status: Part-time, an average of 27 hours per week, 36-week contract (late July to May).

Compensation: $2,500 per semester + Private suite in staff residence hall and $1,000 meal allowance per semester.

Summary:

Calvin University is looking for a dynamic, motivated individual to be a Residence Hall and Community Living Support Graduate Assistant in a traditional first-year/sophomore residence hall. In this position, you will act as a role model and ensure the safety and inclusion of Life & Career Studies Program (LCS) students on campus.You will also work with LCS students one-on-one or in small group setting to help them meet their independent living goals.

Responsibilities will include performing in-person checks, encouraging participation in residence hall events, problem-solving with residents, assisting with roommate disagreements, scheduling safe transportation, responding to emergency calls, and supporting students with meeting their individualized goals.

This position will also connect LCS students with social opportunities on campus, and provide social coaching as needed.

Calvin University's Life & Career Studies Program is passionate about serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disability and empowering them to gain independence and employment skills. We are looking for a team member with the same passion for impacting the lives of those around them.

This position is a 36-week, part-time, live-in position. Hours for this position are flexible but require the ability to work assigned weekends.

This is a great opportunity for a graduate student who is looking for a position with minimal commitment during the week but is available to work on the weekends.

Specific job duties:

1. Assist the supervising LCS Housing Manager with providing overall leadership to LCS students living on campus.

2. Availability to handle emergency calls two days and evenings. Including two to three weekends a month.

3. Meet with LCS students individually, when needed, to help problem-solve issues frequently experienced by students adjusting to dorm life.

4. Meet with LCS students individually to help them identify inclusive activities and events they are interested in and facilitate peer connections.

5. Help coordinate, promote, and decrease barriers to LCS participation in residence life activities.

6. Work alongside students to help promote independent living skills based on their individualized goals.

7. Assist in maintaining effective student relations by collaborating on retention efforts, roommate negotiations, and provide informal mentoring to contribute to students' success and growth.

8. Attend a team meeting one day per week.

9. Attend meetings with Residence Life, Student Conduct, and LCS staff as available.

10. Participate in regular professional development and learning opportunities with other Graduate Assistants and colleagues as available.
