CredentialsExperience with livestock, basic farm skillsSimilar, often no formal certifications required
Work EnvironmentOn-site, living at the ranchOn-site or nearby, may commute daily
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in ranching operations, especially large-scaleBroader, includes seasonal or part-time workers

The main difference is that a Live In Ranch Hand resides on the ranch and performs daily livestock and farm duties, often with housing provided. Both roles require similar skills, but the live-in aspect distinguishes the Ranch Hand as a full-time, on-site employee.

What are live-in ranch hands?

Live-in ranch hands are workers who reside on a ranch property and assist with daily operations such as caring for livestock, maintaining equipment, repairing fences, and other general ranch work. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the size of the ranch and the types of animals or crops present. Living on-site allows them to respond quickly to emergencies involving animals or property. Compensation often includes room and board in addition to a salary or hourly wage.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Live In Ranch Hand, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Ranch Hand, you need practical knowledge of animal husbandry, equipment operation, general maintenance, and basic first aid, often gained through hands-on experience or vocational training. Familiarity with tools like tractors, fencing equipment, and sometimes livestock management software is typically required. Reliability, strong work ethic, adaptability, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the smooth operation of the ranch, animal welfare, and successful teamwork in a demanding environment.

What are some typical daily responsibilities for a Live In Ranch Hand, and how does the role interact with other ranch staff?

A Live In Ranch Hand's daily responsibilities often include feeding and caring for livestock, maintaining fences and equipment, cleaning barns or stalls, and assisting with seasonal tasks such as calving or haying. The role requires close collaboration with ranch managers, other ranch hands, and sometimes veterinarians to ensure animal health and efficient ranch operations. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as many tasks are coordinated and require group effort, especially during busy periods. Flexibility and a willingness to pitch in wherever needed are highly valued in this environment.

What Does a Live-In Ranch Hand Do?

As a live-in ranch hand, your job is to oversee the herding and care of animals. In this role, you may also feed animals, perform various maintenance tasks, and otherwise help keep the ranch functioning. Live-in ranch hands may live in private or communal housing on or near the ranch grounds. You may work early, late, on weekends, or on holidays as necessary. This is a physically intensive role that often requires being on your feet for extended periods, lifting heavy items, and otherwise performing labor on the ranch. Some live-in ranch hands participate in additional tasks, such as escorting visitors, hosting shows and events, or traveling with ranch animals for various purposes.

Job description

Farmers Market Rep
Are you an early riser with a passion for fresh, gourmet bread and a love for community Farmers Markets? We're looking for a reliable and enthusiastic individual to assist in running one of our farmers market stands (these are located in Ogden, Salt Lake, Sandy, Murray, Daybreak, South Jordan, Provo & Spanish Fork) from the end of May through October. Abigail’s Oven offers a fun, interactive environment, based on serving customers with genuine food needs and tastes. Selling our bread you will meet dozens of folks who can finally eat bread again, not to mention the many others who just want to enjoy REAL Sourdough Bread for its texture and excellent flavor.

Responsibilities:

  • Able to lift and transport multiple 27 lb boxes of bread from the bakery (or your delivery location) to the Farmers Market. Set up displays and keep bread off the ground.
  • Maintain, set up, and store the booth, anchor weights, and sales kit, which includes tables, table coverings, hand washing station, trash container with liner, punch cards, aprons, gloves, cash box, banners, pop up booth, and booth wall coverings (used to protect the bread from the sun and weather) and where allowed keep sampling containers stocked, clean and sanitary.
  • Report and be accountable to the Farmers Market Manager, communicating needs, sharing problems, and reconciling inventory each week.
  • Maintain good hygiene during sales using hand sanitizer and washing station
  • Receive (or pick up) bread keeping it cool and out of the sun. Display the bread attractively so that customers can see bread selections and help themselves.
  • Where sampling is allowed, make samples available while maintaining health department standards.
  • Must balance and maintain the cash till. Must be able to count and make change for cash customers, explain how to make a purchase through Venmo, and/or use Square on a mobile device that you provide for credit card purchases (we will provide the dongle, fob, or hands-free device for your phone, but you must download the Square App, keep devices charged, and able to use the equipment needed).
  • Learn about how our REAL Sourdough Bread is made and what its nutritional properties are (see AbigailsOven.com). Our bread naturally spread via word-of-mouth. We need bread evangelists who are as excited about our bread as our customers are.
  • Sell and champion our bread at your local Farmers Market for its flavor, simple, wholesome ingredients, and must be able to explain the health benefits of our bread products.

Requirements:

  • Must be 25 or older and have a clean driving record
  • Must live in or around Spanish Fork where the bakery is located

  • The following days and hours are required:
  • Saturdays approximately 8 hours beginning at about 6:30 a.m. until about 2:30. From July - October.
  • Must be dependable, positive, reliable, and enjoy selling good food.
  • Be a self-starter; grow the market and make it successful.
  • Excellent communication skills, and the ability to create relationships with customers, especially cultivating returning customers.

What We Offer

  • Pay starts at $17 per hour, 8-10 hours per week
  • Around $500 - $680 per month for just part of a Saturday
  • Steady hours with solid pay every Saturday from end of May through October
