Job description

Summary

The primary objective of the Dockhand is to oversee merchandise sales and watercraft rental operations in a public recreation area. The Dockhand greets, assists, and informs visitors about the safe operation of watercraft, sells retail goods, collects recreation use fees as applicable, and supports the daily operation of the marina. The Dockhand maintains the safety, cleanliness, security, and appearance of the marina while assisting with boat launching, retrieval, fueling, and routine maintenance activities.

Responsibilities
  • Greets customers in a friendly, courteous manner and sets a good example for visitors and fellow employees.
  • Accurately completes and processes boat rental contracts.
  • Answers company phones in a friendly and helpful manner.
  • Meets all returning boats and guests as they arrive at the marina.
  • Operates the concession outlet, greets visitors, and provides accurate information regarding marina services and recreation opportunities.
  • Notifies the General Manager immediately any time a guest is not 100% satisfied with their experience.
  • Maintains marina merchandise by keeping displays stocked, organized, and presentable.
  • Collects recreation use fees and helps maintain the safety and security of the marina, dock, parking, boat ramp, and picnic areas, where applicable.
  • Maintains administrative logs, receipts, cash register tapes, and other required records.
  • Checks boats thoroughly for damage, cleans and refuels boats upon their return.
  • Ensures boats are properly secured at the end of each day.
  • Keeps the General Manager informed of all boats, equipment, and trailers requiring repairs or replacement parts.
  • Charges batteries and checks and fills water levels as directed.
  • Performs routine marina maintenance duties, including cleaning boats, equipment, docks, facilities, and keeping the marina free of litter and debris.
  • Operates rental watercraft and provides guests with safety instruction in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard safety standards, including ensuring guests are properly fitted with life jackets.
  • Assists with launching and retrieving boats and maintaining an organized, safe launch area.
  • Assists with other projects and duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Familiar (or willingness to become familiar) with all company and partnering agency policies and guidelines regarding permitted concession areas.
  • Available to work weekends, holidays, and peak visitation periods. Weekly work schedules will be developed and posted by local management.
  • Strong customer service skills and enjoys working in an environment with extensive public contact.
  • Possess good communication skills, a courteous demeanor, and a helpful attitude.
  • Must be able to perform duties in an aquatic environment and safely enter and exit moored watercraft, which may be unstable.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of safe boating practices and marina operations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and perform frequent bending, twisting, climbing, kneeling, and prolonged standing.
  • May be subject to excessive heat and other outdoor environmental conditions.
