What Does a Live In Ranch Hand Do?

As a live-in ranch hand, your job is to oversee the herding and care of animals. In this role, you may also feed animals, perform various maintenance tasks, and otherwise help keep the ranch functioning. Live-in ranch hands may live in private or communal housing on or near the ranch grounds. You may work early, late, on weekends, or on holidays as necessary. This is a physically intensive role that often requires being on your feet for extended periods, lifting heavy items, and otherwise performing labor on the ranch. Some live-in ranch hands participate in additional tasks, such as escorting visitors, hosting shows and events, or traveling with ranch animals for various purposes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Live In Ranch Hand, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Ranch Hand, you need practical knowledge of animal husbandry, equipment operation, general maintenance, and basic first aid, often gained through hands-on experience or vocational training. Familiarity with tools like tractors, fencing equipment, and sometimes livestock management software is typically required. Reliability, strong work ethic, adaptability, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for this role. These skills ensure the smooth operation of the ranch, animal welfare, and successful teamwork in a demanding environment.

What are some typical daily responsibilities for a Live In Ranch Hand, and how does the role interact with other ranch staff?

A Live In Ranch Hand's daily responsibilities often include feeding and caring for livestock, maintaining fences and equipment, cleaning barns or stalls, and assisting with seasonal tasks such as calving or haying. The role requires close collaboration with ranch managers, other ranch hands, and sometimes veterinarians to ensure animal health and efficient ranch operations. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as many tasks are coordinated and require group effort, especially during busy periods. Flexibility and a willingness to pitch in wherever needed are highly valued in this environment.

What are live-in ranch hands?

Live-in ranch hands are workers who reside on a ranch property and assist with daily operations such as caring for livestock, maintaining equipment, repairing fences, and other general ranch work. Their responsibilities can vary depending on the size of the ranch and the types of animals or crops present. Living on-site allows them to respond quickly to emergencies involving animals or property. Compensation often includes room and board in addition to a salary or hourly wage.

Job description

Ranch Hand - Facilities & Grounds Host
Location: Dripping Springs, Texas
Type: Full-Time, Onsite
The Role
This is not a typical facilities job.
We are looking for someone who takes pride in caring for land, tools, and places where people gather to have meaningful, joyful experiences. This role sits at the intersection of facilities, hospitality, and outdoor sport-supporting shotgun courses, pistol and archery ranges, fisheries, and soon gardens, livestock, and additional land-based projects.
You'll spend your days outside, working with your hands, solving practical problems, shaping beautiful spaces, and interacting with members and guests who want to be here. If you enjoy physical work, variety, responsibility, and being part of a tight-knit team on exceptional land, this role can be incredibly rewarding.
What Day-to-Day Looks Like
No two days are the same, but responsibilities commonly include:
  • Maintaining cleanliness, safety, and overall hygiene across outdoor facilities
  • Setting and maintaining shotgun courses and shooting stations
  • Supporting pistol and archery range readiness and upkeep
  • Pistol and shotgun instruction (if able)
  • Assisting with fishery care and land stewardship projects
  • Helping bring new initiatives online (gardens, livestock, special builds)
  • Greeting members and guests with warmth and professionalism
  • Assisting instructors, events, and special projects as needed
  • Identifying maintenance needs and proactively addressing them

This role is hands-on, active, and outdoors-focused.
Who This Role Is For
You might be a great fit if you:
  • Enjoy working outside and take pride in well-kept land and facilities
  • Like practical work, problem-solving, and seeing tangible results
  • Are comfortable interacting with people and representing a premium brand
  • Value teamwork, reliability, and personal accountability
  • Appreciate structure but enjoy variety and autonomy
  • Take safety seriously and understand the importance of detail

Experience with outdoor facilities, ranch work, ranges, or hospitality is a plus-but mindset matters more than resume bullets.
What We Offer
  • Work on beautiful Hill Country land every day
  • A positive, respectful, and mission-driven team environment
  • Competitive pay based on experience
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Company lifestyle benefits and access to unique experiences
  • Long-term growth opportunities as our facilities expand
Why This Role Matters
Our facilities are the foundation of the experience we offer. This role helps ensure that everything feels intentional, safe, clean, and welcoming-so members and guests can focus on enjoying the land, the sport, and the community.
If you're someone who finds satisfaction in doing real work in a meaningful place, this could be a rare and special opportunity.
