Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an outpatient PACU position requiring a minimum of 2 years of PACU experience, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications, and a Virginia or compact RN license.

Details
  • Outpatient PACU setting within a community hospital featuring 8 OR suites operating 24/7
  • PACU unit consists of 13 bays: 10 Phase 1 and 3 Phase 2
  • Patient ratios: Phase 1 โ€” 2:1 | Phase 2 โ€” 3:1
  • Common cases include total joint arthroplasty, spine, orthopedic sports medicine, general surgery, vascular, plastics, urology, ENT, ECT, and GI endoscopy
  • Patient population includes inpatient and outpatient surgical patients across multiple specialties; pediatric patients age 10 and older are included
  • Float requirement: must be able to float to PreOp, ECT (preop/intraop/postop), and GI Endoscopy (preop and recovery only)
  • 36 hours per week, Monday through Friday base schedule with variable shift lengths (typically 9 or 12 hours) and start times
  • Unit coverage spans 0530โ€“2100 (PreOp opens at 0530, PACU closes at 2100); assignments rotate between PreOp and PACU based on daily needs
  • On-call (2nd call) rotation required: 3 weekend/holiday shifts and 3 weekday shifts per 6-week period; agency staff self-schedule after core and PRN staff
  • Weekday call hours: 2100โ€“0530 (8.5 hrs); weekend/holiday call: day shift 0800โ€“2000 or night shift 2000โ€“0800 (12 hrs each)
  • Holiday coverage includes the day before and potentially the day after Inova-observed holidays
  • Epic EMR preferred
Requirements
  • Active RN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia or an active multistate NLC compact license
  • Current AHA certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and PALS
  • Minimum 2 years of PACU RN experience required
  • Strong perianesthesia background preferred
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • Must be comfortable with variable start times including early morning starts in PreOp
  • Must be comfortable with on-call expectations including off-shift, weekend, and holiday coverage
Additional Information
  • Nurses are responsible for caring for patients across PreOp, Phase 1, and Phase 2 PACU depending on patient needs and daily unit assignments
  • Pediatric experience is helpful but not required; trauma/critical care experience is not required
  • An ECG exam is administered on Day 2 of orientation โ€” pass/fail with one attempt only; failure results in assignment termination
  • A pre-start ECG study session is offered the week prior to the start date and is strongly recommended; two day/time options are available
  • Scrub attire: OR Maroon scrubs required in PACU, ECT, and Endoscopy; Maroon OR attire or Navy Inova scrubs when assigned to PreOp; OR attire is provided on campus
  • Fast-paced environment with a strong emphasis on teamwork
