ANNOUNCEMENT OF POSITION VACANCY

SUMMARY: The Petting Farm Supervisor oversees the daily operations of the AGRIscapes Petting Farm under the leadership of the Director. This position is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of Petting Farm animals; maintaining compliance with applicable regulatory requirements; coordinating animal-based educational programs; supervising student employees; and supporting student success through hands-on experiential learning opportunities.

SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU WILL GET TO DO (this is only a small sampling of work variety):

  • Oversee all aspects of daily Petting Farm operations under the leadership of the Director.
  • Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of Petting Farm animals through appropriate husbandry practices, monitoring, and coordination of veterinary care as needed.
  • Work in conjunction with Animal and Veterinary Science (AVS) staff and university animal units to coordinate animal care, transportation, and support needs.
  • Maintain compliance with standards and guidelines of the Animal Welfare Act and other applicable regulations to support maintenance of the USDA Class C Exhibitor License.
  • Maintain accurate records related to animal inventory, health monitoring, vaccinations, treatments, medications, and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Monitor inventory and coordinate purchasing needs for feed, supplies, equipment, medications, and other Petting Farm resources.
  • Prepare periodic reports related to Petting Farm operations and activities.
  • Coordinate and oversee mobile Petting Farm events, including logistics, staffing, animal transportation, and ensuring compliance with animal welfare and safety standards.
  • Coordinate and oversee the animal components of field trips and educational programs, ensuring engaging, safe, and age-appropriate learning experiences for participants.
  • Liaise with AGRIscapes staff and college partners regarding special events involving Petting Farm operations, including PumpkinFest, LA County Fair, and other AGRIscapes programs.
  • Follow reporting procedures and cash handling policies, as applicable.
  • Provide emergency support coverage for the Sheep, Swine, and Cattle Units as occasionally needed.
  • Supervise and provide oversight to student employees supporting Petting Farm operations and programs.
  • Assist with onboarding, training, scheduling, and day-to-day supervision of student employees.
  • Provide mentorship and professional guidance to foster student success through Cal Poly Pomona's Become by Doing philosophy.
  • Create meaningful experiential learning opportunities that support the development of technical animal care skills, customer service abilities, teamwork, leadership, and career readiness.
  • Monitor work performance and provide ongoing feedback to support student growth and accountability.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages student engagement and success.
  • Ability to adhere to regular work schedule which will include evenings and weekends and some holidays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, Education, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant animal handling and husbandry experience.
  • Experience working with livestock and agricultural animals in a public-facing environment.
  • Experience supporting educational programs, youth engagement activities, or public outreach initiatives.
  • Must be able to safely drive and back a pickup truck and trailer.
  • Must be able to pass a Live Scan background check.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with children and the public.
  • Experience designing and delivering engaging educational activities utilizing best practices in agricultural education.
  • Experience in farm, garden, outdoor education, or community engagement programs.
  • Experience supervising and mentoring student employees.
  • Ability to lift 40 to 50 pounds and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
