Job description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform major and minor work necessary to repair and maintain district vehicles
  • Works under the supervision of the Director of Transportation & Head Mechanic in performing vehicle maintenance
  • Assists the Director of Transportation & Head Mechanic in recordkeeping
  • Maintain and securely keep all inventory of parts necessary to the functioning of the bus garage
  • Advise the Director of Transportation & Head Mechanic of any misuse of vehicles by district employees
  • Respond promptly to transportation office or bus driver alerts to equipment problems or needs. This includes pre-warming vehicles in cold weather
  • Keep all unauthorized personnel out of the workshop area at all times
  • Drive bus as needed
  • Be alert to various mechanical conditions that might be dangerous or result in greater costs without immediate action; bring these situations to the immediate attention of the Director of Transportation & Head Mechanic
  • Assist with all emergency vehicle maintenance situations as required
  • Protect the confidentiality of district and office records and information unless authorized and directed by their supervisor to provide same when requested under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act
  • Perform such other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Director of Transportation & Head Mechanicย 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma
  • At least 1 year bus experience - or - 5 years fleet experience as a mechanic preferred
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform all necessary large vehicle repairs
  • Must obtain an IL Commercial Drivers License, passenger and school bus endorsement within 60 days after date of employment

Hourly rate starting at: $24.00
