Job description

Serves as an advocate and resource for District residents living in Assisted Living Facilities. Promotes the quality of life and care for residents. Advocates for the health, safety, welfare and rights by conducting site visits, individual interviews, and participation in various resident focused meetings: i.e., resident councils meetings, individual service plan meetings, and discharge planning meetings. Also, record data in order to meet the national ombudsman reporting requirements.
Position Responsibilities:
• Record complaints on behalf of residents of assisted living facilities.
• Responds to requests for information and assistance from residents, assisted living facilities, general public, care givers, and community organizations, about the ombudsman program, aging, long-term care and public benefits related services and issues.
• Promotes and supports the development and independent operation of resident and family councils.
• Accurately enters data on complaints and program activities into the Ombudsman Program's data management system (GetCare) in a timely manner and in accordance with program policies and procedures.
• Reviews literature and attends training, workshops, forums, and other educational events on long-term care, aging, and work-related issues in order to increase the knowledge and skills used in performance of the duties of the position.
Position Complexity:
This position requires independence in meeting residents, interviewing, critical thinking and decision-making involving individuals with a mix of medical, physical, and mental health issues. In addition, this position requires good communication skills as well as the ability to identify systemic issues impacting groups of residents.
Education, Experience, Competencies:
It is recommended that the candidate for this position hold a Bachelor's degree in Education, Gerontology, Social Work, Psychology, Public Health Administration, Juris Doctorate, and 4 years of experience working with or on behalf of older adults or persons with mental or physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, or an equivalent combination of training and advocacy experience related to the duties of the position. Knowledge of District and federal regulatory systems as they relate to older adults residing in long- term care settings is also recommended.
Must have excellent written/oral communication skills.
Must have reliable, insured transportation and possess a valid driver's license. Be able to use personal vehicle for local travel.
