What is a live aboard cook?

Live Aboard Cooks are culinary professionals who prepare meals on boats, ships, or yachts where they also reside for the duration of their contract or voyage. Their responsibilities include planning menus, sourcing and managing provisions, cooking for the crew and guests, and maintaining cleanliness in galley areas. They often work in unique and sometimes challenging environments, adapting recipes and kitchen techniques to the limitations of a vessel. Live Aboard Cooks play a crucial role in maintaining crew morale and ensuring the wellbeing of everyone on board.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a live aboard cook?

To thrive as a Live Aboard Cook, you need strong culinary skills, food safety knowledge, and experience with meal planning in limited-space environments. Familiarity with galley equipment, provisioning systems, and sometimes certifications like ServSafe are typically required. Flexibility, problem-solving, and excellent communication help you adapt to changing conditions and work harmoniously with the crew. These abilities are crucial for ensuring nutritious, enjoyable meals and the well-being of all aboard during extended periods at sea.

What unique challenges does a live aboard cook face compared to land-based culinary roles?

As a Live Aboard Cook, you'll often work in compact galley kitchens with limited storage and equipment, requiring creativity and adaptability when planning menus and preparing meals.
