What is litigation technology?

Litigation technology refers to the use of specialized software, tools, and technical expertise to support the legal process in litigation cases. This includes managing electronic discovery (e-discovery), organizing and analyzing large volumes of digital evidence, presenting exhibits in court, and ensuring secure data handling. Professionals in this field help law firms and legal departments efficiently handle complex technical aspects of modern litigation, improving accuracy and saving time. The field is constantly evolving, requiring up-to-date knowledge of both technology and legal procedures.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in litigation technology, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Litigation Technology often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of electronic data, ensuring data security, and keeping up with rapidly evolving legal technology tools. Effective communication with attorneys and paralegals is crucial to understand case needs and technical requirements. Staying current through continuous training and certifications, as well as adopting best practices for eDiscovery workflows, can help address these challenges and contribute to successful litigation outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in litigation technology, and why are they important?

To excel in Litigation Technology, you need a strong understanding of legal procedures, evidence management, and information governance, often supported by a degree in legal studies, information technology, or related certifications like ACEDS. Familiarity with eDiscovery platforms (such as Relativity or Concordance), data processing tools, and litigation support software is essential. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication enable effective collaboration with attorneys and IT professionals. These competencies are critical for ensuring secure, efficient, and compliant handling of sensitive legal data throughout the litigation process.

Build Your Litigation Career with One of Virginia's Leading Personal Injury Firms

At Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers, we're passionate about helping injured people rebuild their lives. We've built our reputation by delivering exceptional results, providing outstanding client service, and fostering a collaborative culture where talented professionals can grow.

We're looking for an Associate Attorney who is eager to build a successful career in personal injury litigation. While your primary focus will be litigation, you'll also gain valuable experience in pre-litigation case development—giving you a comprehensive understanding of how great cases are built from day one.

Whether you're an attorney looking to grow your litigation skills or someone with personal injury experience ready for your next opportunity, you'll have the support, mentorship, and resources to continue developing your career.

What You'll Do

As an Associate Attorney, you'll advocate for clients throughout the litigation process while working closely with an experienced legal team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Manage a litigation caseload from intake through settlement, trial, or final resolution.
  • Develop litigation strategies designed to maximize client outcomes.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, discovery, briefs, and other litigation documents.
  • Conduct legal research and analyze complex legal issues.
  • Prepare clients, witnesses, and experts for depositions, mediation, hearings, and trial.
  • Conduct and defend depositions and represent clients at hearings, mediations, settlement conferences, and trials.
  • Evaluate liability, damages, medical evidence, insurance coverage, and overall case value.
  • Maintain regular communication with clients, ensuring they understand their case and feel supported throughout the process.
  • Collaborate with our pre-litigation team to ensure smooth transitions and strong case development.
  • Work alongside paralegals, legal assistants, medical coordinators, and fellow attorneys to deliver outstanding results.

What We're Looking For

We're searching for someone who is:

  • Licensed and in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
  • A graduate of an accredited law school (J.D.).
  • An excellent legal writer, researcher, and communicator.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Confident in building relationships with clients, opposing counsel, experts, and court personnel.
  • Committed to providing exceptional client service.
  • A collaborative team player who enjoys mentoring and learning from others.
  • Comfortable using technology, including Microsoft Office (Filevine experience is a plus).
