Job description

YOUR IMPACT
At the Y, we help youth set and achieve personal and educational goals. The Literacy Instructor implements the literacy curriculum through the United Way Literacy Grant to improve literacy rates. Literacy Instructors can expect 3 hours of hands-on programming and 1 hour of preparatory work each week. This position requires a commitment to fostering positive relationships with participants, parents, and school staff, and modeling the YMCA core values. The Literacy Instructor must demonstrate excellent organizational skills, proactive communication, and a passion for youth development. This position is grant funded and supports grant-funded programming.

WHAT YOUR DAY MAY LOOK LIKE
No two days are the same in this role—but every day centers on helping children discover the joy of reading and the confidence that comes with it.

  • Bring stories to life by leading interactive read-alouds, literacy activities, and discussions that inspire a love of reading.
  • Support every learner by adapting instruction to meet different reading levels, learning styles, and individual needs.
  • Plan engaging lessons by selecting books, preparing hands-on activities, and creating meaningful literacy experiences each week.
  • Build lasting relationships with children by providing encouragement, consistency, and a safe space where every participant feels supported.
  • Partner with families by leading Family Literacy Nights and sharing simple, effective reading strategies caregivers can use at home.
  • Collaborate with educators and community partners to ensure literacy programming is engaging, evidence-based, and consistent across all sites.
  • Track student progress by documenting attendance, reading outcomes, and grant metrics that demonstrate program impact.
  • Create an inclusive environment where every child feels welcomed, respected, and excited to learn.
  • End the day knowing you've made a difference, whether it was helping a reluctant reader gain confidence, celebrating a reading milestone, or sparking a lifelong love of books.

If you're passionate about literacy, love working with youth, and believe every child deserves the opportunity to succeed, you'll find purpose in this role.
