What does 'felony friendly' mean in a job listing?

'Felony friendly' refers to employers or job listings that are open to hiring individuals with felony convictions on their record. These companies or positions do not automatically disqualify applicants based on their criminal history, and instead may consider candidates on a case-by-case basis. This provides opportunities for people with felonies to re-enter the workforce and rebuild their lives. It's important to note that while a company may be 'felony friendly,' hiring decisions still depend on factors like the type of conviction, time since the offense, and the nature of the job.

How do companies that are considered 'felony friendly' structure their hiring and onboarding processes to support applicants with criminal records?

Felony-friendly employers often tailor their hiring and onboarding processes to be more inclusive, focusing on a candidate’s skills and potential rather than past convictions. Applicants may encounter open discussions about background checks, and some companies provide additional support such as mentorship, job training, or second-chance programs. These employers typically foster a supportive work environment and may offer resources to help with reentry challenges, increasing the likelihood of long-term success for new hires with a criminal record. Collaboration with HR, managers, and sometimes external partners is common to ensure a smooth transition into the workforce.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a reentry support specialist for formerly incarcerated individuals, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Reentry Support Specialist, you need a background in social work, counseling, or criminal justice, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications. Familiarity with case management software, community resources databases, and documentation systems is typically required. Exceptional interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and resilience help build trust and provide effective guidance to clients. These abilities are crucial for supporting successful reintegration, reducing recidivism, and fostering positive outcomes for individuals reentering society.
