What is Linux troubleshooting?

Linux troubleshooting refers to the process of identifying, diagnosing, and resolving issues that occur within a Linux operating system or its applications. This can involve addressing problems related to system performance, hardware compatibility, software errors, network configuration, or security concerns. Effective troubleshooting requires knowledge of Linux commands, log files, and system architecture. Professionals use a variety of tools and diagnostic techniques to isolate and fix issues, ensuring the system runs smoothly and efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Linux Troubleshooting, and why are they important?

To excel in Linux Troubleshooting, you need strong expertise in Linux operating systems, shell scripting, and system administration, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Bash, system monitoring utilities, configuration management systems, and certifications such as CompTIA Linux+ or Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) are highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving skills distinguish top performers in this role. These abilities are crucial for quickly diagnosing and resolving technical issues, ensuring system reliability, and supporting organizational IT infrastructure.

Job Description
We are seeking a skilled Systems Administrator to join our dedicated infrastructure operations team in Huntsville, Alabama-the Rocket City. In this hands-on role, you'll focus on the day-to-day administration, maintenance, and support of our Red Hat OpenShift container platforms and Linux environments that underpin mission-critical applications for NASA's ongoing operations on the International Space Station (ISS) and the Artemis program, which is ushering in a new era of lunar exploration and preparing for human missions to Mars.
As we advance our infrastructure with container orchestration and robust automation, you'll handle platform troubleshooting, automate routine tasks, ensure system reliability, and provide direct support to users and teams. This position offers the chance to maintain high-availability systems in a high-stakes aerospace environment, directly contributing to NASA's historic space exploration efforts and working on technology that enables humanity's expansion into the solar system.
Key Responsibilities
  • Administer and maintain Red Hat OpenShift platforms, including daily operations such as cluster monitoring, user management, resource allocation, patching, upgrades, and troubleshooting platform issues to minimize downtime.
  • Perform advanced Linux (RHEL) system administration tasks, including installation, configuration, security hardening, performance tuning, backup/recovery, and log management.
  • Develop and execute automation scripts and playbooks using Ansible and Ansible Automation Platform to automate repetitive administrative tasks, configuration management, deployments, and system maintenance on OpenShift and Linux environments.
  • Support end users and application teams by resolving daily operational issues related to OpenShift and Linux systems, providing guidance, and ensuring smooth access and functionality.
  • Document system configurations, operational procedures, runbooks, and troubleshooting guides with clear, detailed written communication to facilitate team knowledge sharing and compliance.
  • Implement and support Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices using tools like Terraform for consistent provisioning and configuration management.
  • Utilize GitOps workflows and tools such as GitLab for version-controlled infrastructure changes, collaborative deployments, and pipeline automation.
  • Monitor system performance and health, respond to alerts and incidents, conduct root cause analysis, and apply fixes to maintain reliability, security, and compliance in regulated environments.
  • Collaborate with developers, DevOps teams, and stakeholders to integrate OpenShift support with application deployments and resolve cross-team operational challenges.
  • Stay up-to-date with Red Hat technologies, Linux best practices, automation tools, and container administration trends to improve operational efficiency.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (preferred); equivalent professional experience accepted.
  • 6+ years of hands-on experience in systems administration, with strong emphasis on Linux/Red Hat environments and container platforms.
  • Proven expertise in administering Red Hat OpenShift, including troubleshooting, cluster operations, and supporting production workloads.
  • Proficiency in Linux system administration (RHEL preferred) and scripting (e.g., Bash) for task automation.
  • Solid experience with Ansible and Ansible Automation Platform for configuration management and automation.
  • Working knowledge of Infrastructure as Code techniques and tools like Terraform.
  • Familiarity with GitOps practices and tools such as GitLab for version control and CI/CD workflows.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience creating clear documentation, processes, and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively with end users, developers, and cross-functional teams to address operational needs.
  • U.S. citizenship or eligibility to obtain required clearances for NASA/government-related projects (preferred).

Preferred Skills
  • Red Hat certifications (e.g., RHCSA, RHCE, OpenShift Administration) and/or AWS certifications.
  • Experience in aerospace, defense, government contracting, or mission-critical IT operations with focus on security and compliance standards.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Prometheus/Grafana), logging solutions, and hybrid/on-premises environments.
  • Background in supporting containerized applications, DevOps practices, or cloud-adjacent technologies (AWS familiarity a plus, though primary focus is OpenShift).
  • Enthusiasm for space exploration and contributing to NASA's groundbreaking missions.

We offer competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, ongoing training opportunities, and the privilege of supporting technology that powers humanity's journey to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.
