Job description

Weโ€™re seeking a LinuxSystems Engineer to support our U.S. Government program(s) in Laurel, MD. The Linux Systems Engineer will be responsible for administering, maintaining, and securing Linux-based enterprise environments supporting mission-critical operational, development, and test systems. This role focuses on Linux systems administration, configuration management, virtualization, system security, automation, and operational sustainment while supporting hardware deployments, software upgrades, troubleshooting, testing, and customer-facing operations across multiple environments.

Responsibilities:
  • Administer, maintain, and support enterprise Linux-based systems utilizing Rocky Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).

  • Perform Linux system administration including storage management, interface configuration, operating system hardening, security compliance, and patch management.

  • Execute regular system vulnerability scanning, security patching, and compliance activities while maintaining updates within Intelligence Community reporting tools.

  • Utilize Ansible and/or Puppet to automate configuration management, operating system deployment, software installation, and ongoing system maintenance.

  • Support VMware virtualized environments and assist with virtual machine deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management.

  • Develop, maintain, and troubleshoot Bash scripts to automate administrative and operational tasks.

  • Perform root-cause analysis and troubleshoot complex Linux systems, applications, and infrastructure issues.

  • Manage physical deployment, installation, and sustainment of hardware supporting operational and field sites.

  • Facilitate software deployments and upgrades across Operational, Field Test, Development, and Integration environments.

  • Monitor system health, availability, and performance across multiple environments utilizing enterprise monitoring tools and health checks.

  • Schedule, coordinate, and communicate planned maintenance windows and system outages with internal teams and external customers.

  • Maintain and enhance system monitoring services, operational dashboards, and health check capabilities.

  • Assist with system regression testing, integration testing, performance testing, security testing, and customer acceptance testing.

  • Support defect identification, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and documentation of reproducible issues.

  • Utilize GitLab for source control, configuration management, and collaborative development activities.

  • Utilize Atlassian Jira to track work activities, defects, enhancements, and project progress.

  • Research emerging technologies, evaluate new tools, and provide recommendations to improve operational efficiency, automation, and system reliability.

  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including system procedures, operational guides, test procedures, status updates, and engineering documentation.

  • Work effectively both independently and within a collaborative engineering team while providing outstanding customer support and technical communication.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering Science, Engineering Management, or a related discipline from an accredited college or university is required. Five (5) additional years of Systems Engineering experience may be substituted for the degree.

  • Fourteen (14) years of experience as a Systems Engineer supporting programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity.

  • Strong experience administering Rocky Linux and/or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments.

  • Experience with Linux storage administration, interface management, system hardening, and operating system patching.

  • Experience utilizing Ansible and/or Puppet for configuration management, system deployment, and automation.

  • Experience supporting VMware virtualization environments.

  • Experience developing and maintaining Bash scripts.

  • Familiarity with GitLab and Atlassian Jira.

  • Experience troubleshooting enterprise Linux systems and performing root-cause analysis.

Desired Experience:
  • Familiarity with Cisco networking equipment.

  • Familiarity with NetApp NAS storage environments.

  • Experience writing and maintaining test cases, test procedures, test plans, and test reports.

  • Familiarity developing Splunk dashboards and supporting Splunk workflows.

Clearance:
  • Active TS/SCI clearance with Polygraph.

Salary Range:

$160,000 - $225,000 USD / year

Salary Description:

The pay range for this job, with multi-levels, is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
