What are the roles and responsibilities of a Linux System Engineer QA?

A Linux System Engineer QA (Quality Assurance) is responsible for ensuring the reliability, stability, and performance of Linux-based systems through rigorous testing and validation processes. Their duties typically include developing test plans, automating test scripts, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with development and operations teams to resolve defects. They also help ensure that systems meet organizational requirements and industry standards for quality and security. This role often involves maintaining documentation and supporting continuous integration and deployment pipelines.

How does a Linux System Engineer QA typically collaborate with development and operations teams to ensure software quality?

Linux System Engineer QAs play a vital role in bridging development and operations teams by designing and executing automated test suites on Linux environments. They often work closely with developers to understand new features and potential system vulnerabilities, while also coordinating with operations to ensure smooth deployment and system stability. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as the QA Engineer provides feedback from tests, helps troubleshoot issues, and contributes to continuous integration pipelines. This collaborative approach not only ensures high-quality releases but also fosters a culture of shared responsibility for software reliability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux System Engineer QA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux System Engineer QA, you need strong expertise in Linux system administration, scripting (such as Bash or Python), and a solid understanding of QA methodologies, usually backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications like RHCE. Familiarity with automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Jenkins), containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and testing frameworks is essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with development teams. These competencies ensure reliable system performance, efficient troubleshooting, and delivery of high-quality software in demanding environments.

Job description

The Defense Sector at Leidos is seeking a Linux System Engineer to support a fast-paced program with the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center (AFLCMC). In this role, you will design, deploy, maintain, and optimize enterprise infrastructure supporting classified mission systems. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you'll help deliver reliable, secure, and scalable infrastructure while supporting system deployments, lifecycle management, automation, and operational readiness.
This position requires 100% on-site support in Oklahoma City, OK.
Why This Role Matters
  • Modern mission systems depend on resilient, well-engineered infrastructure. As mission requirements evolve, organizations face increasing complexity from system integration, infrastructure modernization, and the need to deliver capabilities efficiently without sacrificing reliability or security.
  • As a Linux System Engineer, you'll help build and sustain the foundational platforms that enable mission success. You'll improve automation, standardization, and operational efficiency while delivering infrastructure that is reliable, scalable, and easier to deploy, manage, and maintain across enterprise environments.

What You'll Bring
  • You have experience supporting enterprise or classified infrastructure with a strong understanding of Windows and Linux systems, virtualization, enterprise core services, storage, networking, and systems integration. You are comfortable deploying, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex environments while improving automation, reliability, and operational efficiency.
  • Most importantly, you're a self-starter who values accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence. You exercise sound judgment, work effectively with minimal oversight, and serve as a trusted engineering partner to both technical teams and leadership.
  • If you're looking for an opportunity to modernize mission-critical infrastructure, influence technical direction, and make a measurable impact supporting national defense, we'd like to talk with you.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Install, configure, maintain, and patch physical and virtual Linux servers.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize system performance to ensure high availability, reliability, and operational readiness.
  • Manage operating system updates, security hardening, and configuration changes in accordance with DoD policies and standards.
  • Support system backups, disaster recovery, and data integrity to ensure business continuity.
  • Administer system access, user accounts, and security configurations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support system deployments, software integration, and infrastructure modernization.
  • Maintain accurate system documentation, configuration records, and operational procedures.
  • Respond to and resolve infrastructure and system issues, including performance, availability, and security-related incidents.
  • Promote knowledge sharing, continuous improvement, and technical collaboration across the team.

Basic Qualifications:
  • US Citizen with at least a Top Secret clearance and the ability to obtain a SCI prior to your start date
  • Bachelor's degree with 4+ years of experience or Master's degree with 2+ years of experience. Additional years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree
  • DoD 8140 Intermediate certification or DoD 8570 IAM Level II certification (or higher)
  • Foundational experience with cloud platforms such as AWS and Azure
  • Experience administering Linux and Windows environments, including networking fundamentals and common protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, SSL/TLS, SMTP, DNS).
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to bring structure and clarity to ambiguous or unstructured information.
  • Self-starter that can work independently while possessing excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • US Citizen with an active TS/SCI security clearance
  • Linux certifications (RHCSA, RHCE, CompTIA Linux+)
  • Experience administering Red Hat Satellite
  • Experience with virtualization platforms, including VMware ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V
  • Experience with enterprise infrastructure services, including PKI, certificate management, RSA Authentication Manager, RDS, and VDI
  • Experience automating system administration using Ansible, including developing custom playbooks
  • Familiarity with ITSM platforms such as ServiceNow and Jira Service Management
