Job description

The Linux Systems Engineer provides technical expertise related to implementation, management, and security of Linux infrastructure across the Belk enterprise. This role is responsible for ensuring projects are implemented according to the plans of the Architecture team. Validating with expertise that strong authentication, access control, and threat mitigation strategies are in place to protect retail operations, corporate environments, customer-facing applications and cloud environments. Additionally, the role will assist in the evaluation, design, and architecture of new technologies in the environment as well as performing server problem resolution and assisting in the development and documentation of technical standards and interface applications.

Essential Functions:

  • Serve as a key member of the infrastructure engineering team.
  • Partner with Architecture and Security teams to implement enterprise standards for access control, logging, vulnerability remediation, and system hardening.
  • Deploy, configure, and maintain enterprise Linux systems for multiple environments including on-prem, Azure, and GCP.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues with developers, support staff, vendors etc.
  • Automate provisioning and configuration using tools like Ansible or Terraform. Use and knowledge of Systems and rc.d for system starts and shutdowns.
  • Plan, coordinate, document, and implement server security measures.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend software, hardware and configurations for improved performance and security.
  • Provide Tier 3 support to operations teams at OS level.
  • Document and transfer knowledge to operations and support personnel

Education / Experience Requirements:

  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of experience administering and supporting Linux systems in enterprise environments.
  • Experience with shell scripting including ssh and sudo.
  • Knowledge of enterprise security practices including certificate management, security hardening, vulnerability remediation etc.
  • Advanced knowledge of clustering services, load balancing, and replication.
  • Linux certifications such as RedHat or Oracle Linux professional desired.
  • Experience on IBM AIX desired.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Solarwinds etc.
  • Working knowledge of Delinea Centrify desired.

Additional Information:

  • Required on site at Belk HQ, located in Charlotte, NC Tuesday through Thursday.
  • Ability to work occasional nights/weekends for implementations and as needed for level 3 support.
