How much do line prep cook jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 24, 2026, the average hourly pay for line prep cook in Texas is $14.89, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.41 and $16.59 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are line prep cooks?

Line prep cooks are kitchen professionals responsible for preparing ingredients and assembling dishes according to restaurant recipes and standards. They work on the 'line,' a station in the kitchen where food is cooked and plated before being served. Their tasks often include chopping vegetables, portioning ingredients, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring that all items are ready for the chefs and other line cooks. Line prep cooks play a crucial role in maintaining efficiency and consistency during meal service.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

A line prep cook typically does not earn $10,000 a month without a degree; this level of income is uncommon in entry-level culinary roles. High-paying jobs that can reach such earnings often require specialized skills, certifications, or experience in fields like sales, real estate, or entrepreneurship, rather than standard kitchen positions.

What do line and prep cooks do?

Line cooks prepare and cook food on the restaurant line, following recipes and presentation standards, while prep cooks handle tasks such as chopping, measuring, and organizing ingredients to ensure smooth kitchen operations. Both roles require attention to detail, time management, and knowledge of food safety practices. They often work in fast-paced environments and may use tools like knives, mixers, and cooking equipment.

What is the difference between Line Prep Cook vs Line Cook?

AspectLine Prep CookLine Cook
ResponsibilitiesPreparing ingredients, chopping, portioning, and setting up stationsCooking dishes, assembling plates, and executing menu items during service
Skills & CertificationsBasic culinary skills, food safety certifications (e.g., ServSafe)Advanced cooking skills, experience in various cooking techniques
Work EnvironmentKitchen prep area, early shifts, less pressure during serviceFront-line during service, high-pressure environment

While both roles work in the kitchen, a Line Prep Cook focuses on preparing ingredients and setting up stations, whereas a Line Cook actively cooks and plates dishes during service. The Prep Cook's role is essential for smooth operations, but the Line Cook handles the core cooking tasks. Both positions require food safety knowledge and culinary skills, but the Line Cook typically has more experience and technical cooking expertise.

What are some common challenges faced by line prep cooks during busy service periods?

Line prep cooks often experience high-pressure situations, especially during meal rushes when quick and accurate food preparation is crucial. Maintaining organization, multitasking effectively, and communicating clearly with the kitchen team are essential to keep up with orders and ensure food quality. Adapting to last-minute menu changes or special dietary requests can also be challenging, but these experiences help build valuable skills in time management and teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Line Prep Cook, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Line Prep Cook, you need a solid understanding of food safety, basic cooking techniques, knife skills, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment and food handling certifications, such as a ServSafe certificate, are commonly required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure consistent food quality, maintain kitchen safety standards, and support smooth kitchen operations during busy service periods.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

Line prep cooks typically do not earn $2000 a day; such high daily earnings are usually associated with specialized roles like surgeons, corporate executives, or high-level consultants. These positions often require advanced skills, certifications, or extensive experience and may involve long hours or high-stakes environments.

Do line cooks make money?

Line cooks earn an hourly wage that typically ranges from minimum wage to higher rates depending on experience, location, and establishment. Many also receive tips, which can significantly increase their total earnings. Salaries can vary widely, but the job generally offers a starting point for those interested in culinary careers.

Job description

We're looking for a Line/Prep Cook who shows up on time, works hard, and takes pride in every plate that leaves the kitchen. This ain't a place for excuses, drama, or standing around looking at your phone. This is a family operation, and everybody pulls their weight.
If you've got hustle, respect, and a strong work ethic, we got a spot for you.
What You'll Be Doing
  •  Prepping vegetables, sauces, proteins, and ingredients to our standards.
  •  Making sure every dish is consistent, fresh, and cooked correctly.
  •  Keeping your station clean, organized, and ready for service.
  •  Following recipes and portion standards exactly.
  •  Working with urgency during busy lunch and dinner rushes.
  •  Rotating stock and properly storing food.
  •  Maintaining food safety and sanitation standards.
  •  Helping your teammates when the kitchen gets slammed.
What We Expect
  •  Show up on time. If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late.
  •  Take pride in your work.
  •  Move with purpose and urgency.
  •  Respect your coworkers and management.
  •  Keep your station clean. A messy station is a messy cook.
  •  Be coachable and willing to learn.
  •  Handle pressure without falling apart.
  •  Bring a positive attitude every day.
Experience
  •  Previous kitchen, prep cook, line cook, pizza, or restaurant experience preferred.
  •  Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 pounds.
  •  Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
What You Get
  •  Competitive pay based on experience.
  •  Consistent hours.
  •  Growth opportunities.
  •  A kitchen that feels like family.
  •  Free shift meal.
A Message From The Boss
"Here's the deal. We can teach you how to cook. We can't teach you heart. We can't teach you hustle. If you're the kind of person who works hard, respects the team, and takes pride in doing things the right way, you'll do just fine here. If you're looking for shortcuts, keep walking."
Apply in person at Gino's Italian Joint or send us your information.
Work hard. Stay humble. Take care of the family.
