Line Editors often juggle multiple deadlines and projects, requiring strong time management and the ability to quickly adapt to varying writing styles or tones. Maintaining consistency while respecting each author's unique voice can be challenging, especially when editing work from multiple contributors. Additionally, navigating feedback from authors or managing conflicting editorial guidelines may require diplomacy and problem-solving skills. As part of a collaborative editorial team, you'll often work closely with copy editors, writers, and sometimes project managers to ensure that content meets the highest quality standards.

What does a Line Editor do?

A Line Editor reviews written content to improve clarity, flow, and style while ensuring grammatical accuracy. They focus on sentence structure, word choice, and readability rather than broad content or structural changes. Line Editors work closely with writers to refine tone and consistency. Their goal is to enhance the text without altering the author's voice. This role is common in publishing, journalism, and content creation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Line Editor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Line Editor, you need exceptional grammar, punctuation, and syntax expertise, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP, Chicago, or MLA) and editing tools like Microsoft Word's Track Changes or Adobe Acrobat is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to provide constructive feedback are key soft skills for this position. These skills help ensure high-quality, polished content that meets both editorial standards and client expectations.

Informa Markets, a division within Informa, creates global platforms for industries to trade, innovate and grow. We organise over 450 large-scale branded and transaction-led events in over a dozen specialist markets. These are typically not-to-be-missed live and on-demand B2B events where industries convene and people gather to do business.

We also provide data and digital content, as well as year-round online platforms where companies showcase their businesses and products and buyers conduct research, generating valuable leads.

Job Description

This role is based in our Boulder office.

Nutrition Business Journal (NBJ) is seeking an Editor, Data & Insights, to support both the editorial and data analytics teams in producing high-quality content and insights for Informa publications and events.

This role is ideal for an early-career professional with strong editorial and writing skills, a knack for data analysis, and a desire to contribute to a dynamic and growing industry. In this role, you  will assist with a variety of tasks, including reporting, writing, editing, data analysis, and visualization, while working closely with senior team members to ensure the delivery of impactful content and insights.

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Editorial Support:
    • Report and write short- to medium-length content for Nutrition Business Journal and related publications.
    • Synthesize data into clear, concise, and engaging written content for client-facing reports and publications.
    • Perform line edits and execute editorial guidance from the senior editor, including restructuring stories from freelancers.
    • Brainstorm and execute content for Informa events-namely NBJ Summit, Natural Products Expo West, Newtopia Now, and the SupplySide events.
    • Work closely with the managing editor to optimize production timelines.
  • Data Analytics Support:
    • Assist the data analytics team with data modeling and analysis using Microsoft Excel.
    • Visualize data using tools such as Tableau (or demonstrate the ability to learn data visualization software).
    • Translate data into forward-looking analysis, actionable insights, and predictions.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Use social media tools to promote content and engage with the audience.
  • Collaborate with the editorial and data teams to ensure seamless integration of data-driven insights into editorial content.
  • Support the creation of client-facing reports by combining editorial and data elements.
  • Contribute to creating and moderating digital/virtual events as requested.

Secondary Tasks:

  • Attend industry events such as Natural Products Expo West, NBJ Summit, Newtopia Now, and other trade events as necessary.
  • Serve as a representative of New Hope Network and NBJ at public events and on press trips.
  • Collaborate with other team members to produce video content for newhope.com. Interview industry experts on video at events such as Natural Products Expos.
  • Take on special projects as requested.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Data Analytics, Business, or a related field.
  • 1-3 years of professional experience in editorial roles, data analysis, or a combination of both.
  • Experience in the nutrition, health, or natural products industry is a plus but not required.

Skills and Competencies:

Editorial Skills:

  • Strong writing, reporting, and editing skills with the ability to produce clear, concise, and engaging content.
  • Proficiency in synthesizing complex data into accessible written content for diverse audiences.
  • Experience in line editing and restructuring content, including working with freelance contributors.
  • Ability to brainstorm and execute content ideas for publications and events.

Data Analytics Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data modeling and analysis.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools such as Tableau or a demonstrated ability to learn similar software.
  • Strong analytical skills to translate data into actionable insights, forward-looking analysis, and predictions.

Digital and Social Media Skills:

  • Experience using social media platforms to promote content and engage with audiences.
  • Basic understanding of digital content creation, including video production and virtual event moderation.

Event and Industry Engagement:

  • Willingness to attend and represent the organization at industry events, trade shows, and press trips.
  • Ability to conduct video interviews with industry experts and contribute to event-related content.

Personal Attributes:

  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with editorial, data, and event teams.
  • A proactive and adaptable mindset, with a willingness to take on special projects and learn new skills.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.

Technical Requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and basic knowledge of SEO is a plus.
  • Experience with video editing tools or platforms is an advantage.

Additional Requirements:

  • Ability to travel occasionally to attend industry events and represent the organization.
  • Flexibility to work on special projects or moderate virtual events as needed.
